Can any help with an id?

I have a green indicator light between the steering column and headlight switch.

Can't be for fogs as I have both green and yellow buttons f/r so.....?

It's not connected to any wires and the hole in the dash is very clean, could be factory or very well done aftermarket?

Any info appreciated, TIA

Second pic, sorry for low quality cell phone pics, but that's the best I have for the moment.

Added by a previous owner.

+1 for this one.

Let it be if you think it's a clean install (and judging to photo it seems to be). A blind plug wouldn't be better for sure.
Strange though that no wires still connected.

Makes me think, why would you need an additional green light..... :-)

Are there any indicators not working? Rear window defogger? Extra extra driving light indicator?
I am trying to think what else would be good to have an indicator? Engine fan light? Red line indicator? Boost? Shock mount failure indicator? I met a guy that had a 'police' installed breathalyzer. His car wouldn't start unless the operator blew sober.
Maybe an emergency brake on indicator? It's been so long since I drove my old bimmers i cant remember if they have an e-brake indicator? If not....

I give up....

I have a faceted red indicator light on my left dash panel, I wasn't sure why it was there. It looks dealer installed. I tested it and the light lit up. So I wired it to Athena's fog lights so it lights when they are on. I can't see the green push button switch light.

I also have what looks like a factory installed toggle switch in the left fuse compartment door that was probaly hooked up to the red dash light in the past.

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping it was a cool option or unique...but from what I can deduce, it's either some sort of engine compartment indicator or redundant fog indicator. (Coupe did use to have ac...)

I personally might make it into an lighter engaged accessory light, but in keeping with the spirit of no-nonsense tourer, I wonder what would be the ideal conversion....but I agree that it will stay for now...

I may have solved the mystery....this could be for the tow package installed on my coupe....

But what does it indicate? Anyone else with a BMW tow hitch or other car know?

Thanks Jay,

He probably was....actually I want to say the first owner was about 62-63 years old from my paperwork.

I am just as surprised as you, the tow package is real nice w/wiring harness & cap/accessories (albeit they do show wear)....

The light works like a cap so maybe I will leave it untouched....

Trailer could have had electric brakes.

It certainly makes weekends more interesting!

Wow wow wow, are you serious? A coupe trailer? That front end must have been completely beyond hope.

I guess that is a good way to double your gas tank capacity.

And on top of that, the trailer gets its own asphalt patch???

Nothing wrong with having a trailer, there are times.....

Seeing this again it appears that it may even have an E9 front bumper at the other end which could mean an entire E9 front. Does anyone know of this outfit?

I have seen at least one other tow hitch on an e9, it's a member from Belgium or Netherlands I think.

These were probably made for 5 series as well so it makes sense.

As for the red trailer, I have seen it before but mot sure what the story is. It looks like a fun toy for club events and such.
