I believe the most difficult part is finding the evaporator that fits under the dash, the dash control panel and side console parts. My car had these so I am not sure where to look for them.

There are aftermarket compressors and condensors and dryers available (I just sourced replacement parts through ICEautoair) and you can have hoses made.

The interior parts are very hard to come by .. particularly the faceplate (very difficult, and very expensive) console pieces a little bit easier if you are patient and watch e-bay etc.....
The evaporator isnt easy either , however the e3 evaporator is interchangeable, so if u can find a 4 door with A/C.. and the switchs and knobs are the same so that is important as they are very hard to find also

I have an e3 wreck with A/C, and all the parts are basically the same accept the console pieces/ alloy faceplate and of course the gear shifter console.. The parts that are hard to find !!

Under the bonnet you discard most of the stuff anyway, eg. replace compressor with newer rotary type, new condenser and electric fan, and dryer , perhaps Radiator

bottom line , can be done but you need patience, some luck, help from other members and a nice thick bankroll !!

I am deciding between aftermarket or get the original parts. It's very hot where I live. About 40 degrees Celsius hot. So the air cond need to be up to the task. There are some aftermarket kit I found. But it is big and can not be installed under the original console unit. Can some one who went through this projects give me some pointers. Thx

There is a lot on this forum to search. Here is just one thread
http://e9coupe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7739&page=5

Unfortunately a lot of posts write "AC" as abbreviation and the forum search tool doesn't work with 2 and 3 letter words. So try this in Google search "site:e9coupe.com ac retrofit"

Pull up thehackmechanics posts and consider getting his book.

There are still problems... Like deciding on a compressor and locating a support bracket that will fit it.

The hardest piece is...

As Twistinglane said, there's a lot of info in my book (see my signature), but it's general information about retrofitting a/c into a vintage car.

I did a full a/c retrofit on my '73 CSi. Long story short:

--Buy an original evaporator assembly (they're around, and the same as a Bavaria).

--The hardest part to find is the plastic piece that sits on top of the evap assembly and directs the air through the grills in the center console. They're plastic, unique to the E9, and incredibly fragile. Someone else discovered, I believe, that the Bavaria piece will work if you block off the side sections.

--Buy an air-conditioned console and faceplate. This is unique to the E9, and rare. If the gentleman above has these pieces, throw money at him until he sends them to you.

--Then, basically, throw out every other a/c piece.

--Buy a new rotary-style compressor.

--Buy the bracket to adapt it to the M30 engine. This used to be trivial, but the adapter brackets are NLA. Several long threads on this, including one of mine.

--Buy the largest parallel flow condenser that will fit in the nose, and the largest fan that will fit on the condenser.

--Make all new hoses.

--Install a new receiver-dryer.

It's very do-able. I love having working a/c in mine for the long drives to and from The Vintage.
