Alternator differences

Does anyone recall why there are two different styles of alternators? Is it an early vs. late thing? I've seen alternators that have a rubber bushing in the main mounting hole, where the alternator bolts to the upper bracket, as well as another style which does not have that rubber bushing. It seems that they use different brackets unless I'm missing a piece. I'm not sure where this rubber bushing alternator came from but I' trying to install it on a 73 CSL and it doesn't fit properly in the bracket.
 
hey buddy, the rubber bushing ones came along "later"...if memory serves, roughly E12/E24 era. The idea must have been to reduce vibration-related failure. I know I've seen a lot of the old solid-mounts where the casting "ear" was, shall we say, "worn." 8)

If you have your old "original" solid-mount alternator, you can have it rewound for higher output, but if you decide to go that route (even having it rewound at all) be sure its the "correct" one (assuming "correct" is whatcha want for your L)

'course, there IS the alternative of brackets scavanged from a 530/633
