This Happens on Saturday, I am heading south to purchase 2 low mile original survivors.
I might be crazy but I am hoping the sunroof car is not as bad as I imagine when it concerns rust.
I will be selling one to re-coupe the funds (pun intended)
What is a '74 3.0 CS -Automatic worth? The car's are original with basic wear expected on an 80k mile car.

I managed to find the rust diagram which is awesome!

What would break the deal? is there a rust spot that kills the car?

Also, federal bumpers suck. I would like to convert to small bumpers. I hear from the guys in La Jolla, CA that it is not worth the expense. Are replicas avail and how much? I plan on driving this car in my funeral so in time it will probably have every nut and bolt turned.

As far as the mechanical is concerned I grew up on the early BMW's and managed to become a professional BMW mechanic, but I haven't touched an E9 in 15 years. I am a bit rusty on what to look for...hopefully the car wont be.

Thanks for all the help!!!

Hi Denis
Hope the other is a 4 speed? As far as what it's worth you can watch EBay and see what people are getting price wise but you may want to complete the least rusty shell with the best parts from both and part out the rest? I'm interested in a front seat and some other parts if you go that direction. Tim
PS where is your shop. I grew up in Sac and lived in Curtis Park before moving to Reno.

Both of them are automatics. I have a 265 conversion I have been saving with a euro 3.5 just in case this happened one day

My shop is in East Sac right across the street from Bertoluccis Auto Body.

I am not to enthusiastic about parting out a perfectly good car but if I do you guys would be the first to know. I might just take on the rusty shell. I have a bit of skill in metal fab that can prevent me from screwing it up too much :???:

I have a hard time believing the prices on ebay but if so I might guess I can sell ether for about 12k. Would that be unreasonable?

I would be coming up on a new wood kit that I would part with. NOS for $1200?

I would keep both but the dent in the account would be straining not to mention it would kill my progress on building my 2002 and sorting parts on one of the E9's. I really have no interest in flipping them. The sale is for both cars only. I tried to talk about buying 1 but he said no.

His name is Steven, right?

Couldn't get much info out of him, and I was also looking at these two, what to split?

Denis,

The pictures weren't that close up of the critical areas, but they both certainly looked serviceable. I saw the ad for the sale of these cars too and was intrigued, but I already have two coupes, so I would be crazy to take on two more. I'd say you have a bargain on your hands if you can perform the transmission/engine swap on your own and the rust isn't too bad.

I just did this too! I bought 2 '72CS cars and recently sold one.

It had a stripped interior, it ran and stopped, and had a CSi engine in it. It had rust on the front inner fenders and front rockers. It sold locally for $3,250

Hope that helps
James

I'm in Rocklin, along with Barry. If you end up with the coupes let us know and we'll come by and stare at them with beer in hand...

I live in Sacramento off of Watt Avenue. I'm just about to get my '72 CS on the road (carbed 1991 3.5, Getrag 265). I'd be down to get together with some of you local guys and talk E9s.

Well, anything that is structural. e9's typically rust around the upper front spring supports - that is bad. Rocker panels provide some of the body support. These cars usually don't just rust on one place - a car that has a lot of visible rust in the exterior panels, probably has rust in the structural areas as well.

Also, federal bumpers suck. I would like to convert to small bumpers. I hear from the guys in La Jolla, CA that it is not worth the expense. Are replicas avail and how much?

I wouldn't dispute the guys at La Jolla Independent. Sure, people have converted 1974 e9's to the earlier bumpers, but unless your aunt left you a '74 in her will, why start with one if you hate the look?

No, repro pre-'74 bumpers aren't available - you need to find good used pieces. And yes, everyone else is looking for them too.

You guys have been great with all the info and thanks for the call! Anytime you want have a stop by the shop. There isn't much eye candy but I can't get enough talkingabout the Bavarian creations.

....now just maybe one of the 252 507's will pop up on craigs

Just got back and the cars are still with him.

The white non sunroof car was very nice.
It has a worn interior expected with a car from 74 but the paint was perfect. He mentioned it had not been painted but I found tape lines in very hidden places. A nice quality paint job before him or the previous owner.
Virtually rust free.
The only down side was the repaired front clip. The nose took a hit at some time and the repair was a 6/10. Cosmetically it looked great but underside looked poor with hammer marks and puller holes welded within the front fender wells.
..still, I really liked the car.

The Red car unfortunately was in poor condition. It looked great and had a clean original interior. A poor respray that was fading with overspray on lights and rubber.
The rust in section 1 the wheel wells was very bad. holes through. I stopped there.

Steve was very nice and accommodating. He offered tools and was more than willing to roll the cars on ramps and take it apart with us.
I felt the buy was still good but I personally cant stomach 1 car at 15k and a rolling parts car. Too much for me.

I asked about parting the package and he said no. I could gather he is an enthusiast and really does not want to sell. There is no room for negotiation. I tried.

I honestly feel he should keep the cars. It looks like the 2 are well kept and currently in great hands.

Thank you guys for all the help!! Keep me informed if something pops up. I am avidly looking and will one day have my E9!
