A couple of comments on sound in cars. First, you need to consider the sound deadening in your car as part of the sound system. If you don't take steps to diminish road noise, it will drown out your music. (And, unfortunately, glass transmits noise well, so while the large greenhouses on our cars are pretty, they make diminishing outside noise difficult).
A second consideration is how we perceive sound. We are not very good at identifying the location of low frequency sounds, which is why subwoofers can be located below or behind us. We are, however, good at identifying the location of higher frequency sounds - like voices - and here having speakers at ear level, or close to ear level, makes a big difference. Alas, with our cars, there are no unobtrusive locations that would put tweeters close to our ears.
