This may or may not be of interest to BMW lovers.
A couple of months ago My son called me to ask if I would go with him to look at a car. Of course I said "yes " what else would a 74 year old classic car fanatic answer. The car was about 30 miles away and I had no idea what was in the garage when we pulled into he driveway. What was behind the door was a Silver 1972 Mercedes 350SL roadster with a Black hardtop. Outside of a couple of door moldings that usually fall off, there was a small amount of rust on the left rear quarter and both front inner fenders had rust and would need repair. Milage was a low 82k. Black leather interior was in better than average condition for a car of that age.
Now for the rest of the story which maid for an easy sale.
The car was originally owned by Ms. Muriel ( Mickie ) Siebert,the first women to have a seat in the NY Stock Exchange what passed in 2013. In an autobiography she mentions owning three Mercedes,the first being this car which supposiedy was the first 1972 350sl to be imported t the US ad was in he Mercedes Museum in New York at the of Purchase. She had been waiting for a white one ,however after seeing the car she decided it was the one for her. As the story goes a fried of her.s knew the CO at Mercedes headquarters and Muriel called the CO and after introducing herself she asked " Don't you think the first women who had a seat in the NY. Stock Exchange should have the first 350sl that came into the US? ". Needless to say she bought the car. Interesting is that the 1972 is the only 350SL and was
Built on a 350sl chassie. Being imported to the US and because of regulations it was imported with a 350SL badge. Dealers were sent 450SL badges t give to buyers of the new 350s.
After this that most likely bored the members who read it. The car is now owned by my son who moved from a house with a five car garage to a house in Newburryport,Ma with a two car garage. Of course he plans on building a three car garage soon. In the meantime I get the job of finding storage for the Mercedes or sell it to a member of the BMW Forum. That would be the biggest challenge I've had since stealing my wife any from her boyfriend 53 years ago.
