Finally after searching on and off for the last 5 years, with the blessing of the mrs's, I pulled the trigger yesterday and I bought a 71 2800cs automatic. I bought the car from a nice gentlemen, Stephen from Foreign Auto Ent in Gloucester MA. The car was mentioned a few weeks back I believe under the cars for sale section. Car appears to be in decent shape but is by no means a show model and I realize that I will have to do some investing in the next few years to make sure that she stays on the road as long as possible. Typical rust issues here and there but mechanically she seems solid, I drove her home to RI without any issues, straight as an arrow, good acceleration and braking power, no serious smoke.
Car was originally a CA car and was shipped to NYC beginning of 2001. There was extensive work done to the car and it's all documented. I am by no means a expert at any of this but i am a pretty quick leaner and with lots of help out there in the community I hope to get her as pretty (original) and solid as my wallet allows me to. Some areas I need/want to address over time

Rust Issues: truck lid, fender, hood and who knows where else...
Rear windows don't work
Re veneer wood panelling
Possible manual transmission conversion
New bbs rims
And I am sure many more unplanned repairs...

But for the time being i am just going to clean her up nice and enjoy the ride and beauty.

Cheers
Pieter

Ps pix to come after she's all cleaned up, looks like its going to a busy memorial day weekend!

Congratulations Pieter! So are you also in the Greater Boston area or is that just where the coupe was purchased from? We have a growing number of E9s alive and being rejuvenated here in the Nor'East US.

Looking forward to seeing your photos after you have applied some TLC to the new member of your family.

Congrats, lots of good info and advice here.

Hope you can attend the Vintage @ Saratoga, the site of the Nor'E9 CoupeFest this year. More info and registration links are in the Events section.

Welcome to New England E9-Land!

The forum is a wealth of knowledge to help the newbie!
Are your rear windows stuck up or down?

I really recommend the 5 speed conversion!
If you want to go original I have a nice set of 4 wheels without tires.
Vintage Sports and Racing does a great job of rust remediation!

So, that makes six coupes in Rhode Island. CookeD and I are in RI and have lots of experience with coupe repairs and restoration. Let us know when we should visit.

Wow 6 coupes in the greatest little state and 2 in East Greenwich thats quite amazing. Mike, I am sure I will have to pick your brain now and then. You can come by anytime, i should be cleaning, brushing, polishing all Saturday. You know where i live.

Stan, the windows are luckily stuck closed (the front one work although the driver side one is a bit temperamental). Yes from what i gather the manual coversion is highly recommended. maybe in the distant future, same counts for the rims

2 in East Greenwich!?

I have business in East Greenwich and next time I will have to put out the word!
Cars and Coffee is for the morning but after work it is beers and bimmers!

Q&A for your 2800

Q Rust Issues: truck lid, fender, hood and who knows where else...
A Time and money fix these, btw it's "trunk" and you will eventually find out where else.

Q Rear windows don't work
A They get jammed shut. The mechanism is adjustable, the tracks should be cleaned, the motor and transmission should be cleaned and lubed.

Q Re veneer wood panelling
A Time and money again unless your handy with wood veneer

Q Possible manual transmission conversion
A Not difficult but you do need some muscle, and the replacement trans.

Q New bbs rims
A A good deal of money will address this

Q And I am sure many more unplanned repairs...
A Members of this list have done it all and written about it. The search function will solve most of your information issues; you then have to supply the elbow grease or shovel out the dough.

Newbie

Thanks for all your encouraging replies guys, I am looking forward being a worthty member of this e9 community, also looking forward meeting, and seeing your cars, at local events. I will post pictures of the good, bad and ugly over the weekend, I would imagine I will have many more questions

Pieter

you should have a window tool in your glove box. Looks like a whitish plastic stick with teeth at one end. the door and rear panels have a plug that can be removed to expose a whitish gear. the tool will move the gear so you can close the window in an emergency. Sometimes the windows are closed and they bind so if you and get them to move just a little the motors will work again.

Also look in the door pockets - that's where I found my window tool. Pull the panel plugs to expose the motor gear and try the switch (key in full on position briefly or with engine running), if binding you will feel the gear try to move as you press the switch. If so try to help the gear along in the direction - you may just pop it free. Either way they will need to be regreased etc which has been posted here before. Good luck with the discovery phase.

welcome doubledutch! I think you'll find all the help you need here.
About the windows, mine get stuck closed once in a great while and just need a little help (push the window down by hand) to get going again.

A little off topic, but it seems that we have quite a large community in New England. Do we have an accurate count? Just yesterday, my wife swears that she saw a beige coupe driving through the middle of town. She didn't think to look a the plates, but I don't know of one anywhere near here.

There should be 6 coupes in RI now.

Parker Spooner's beige 2800CS went to Michael Izor in Natick. I think that he sold it, but it might still be in the area.

Congrats on the car, and make sure you have a blast with it!

Does this may make RI the most populous E9 state in the nation, with a per-registered percentage of 0.00075%?

Yes, Mike keeps calling me out, and yes, between the two of us, there is a lot of repair knowledge.

I have a feeling my summer is filling up quickly, but hopefully I will have some time to surface at some point. Cars and ****tails or cars and coffee sound like they're right down my alley.

Best of luck!

the down side of that is that it doesnt make it as unique to own a E9 in RI...

Love to go for coffee, beer, ****tail, i am not fussy, and talk shop.

Looking forward meeting all you RI coupe owners

Coupe Night in E Greenwich

I will be in Coventry Tuesday and Wednesday night!
Can we get a few coupes to converge in one location?
It will prevent me from wasting money at the Foxy Lady!!

My investments at the Foxy were always worthwhile!
