What are the correct locations for an electric antenna for a 72 CSi ? I think it is a Hirschman.
We are installing a Europa II from Becker Autosound, and I am also hunting down some period correct BMW knobs, as the radio came with Mercedes knobs. Anyone have any for sale or trade?
Thanks!

If you don't want it exposed to dirt and road rash in the front wheel well then the trunk is only real solution, driver's side is most common.

There are a couple threads on antenna location so try a search there. Dealer instructions from Becker have them on the driver front fender but some were done in the driver side trunk which is more euro and I think cooler looking.

The Blaupunkt silver faced knobs that match the a/c knobs won't fit the Becker without cutting and altering them which I did on a pair to install on my Becker.

The original Becker knobs for my coupe look like this which Beckerautosound should have or Koenig Klassikc (sp?) in germany:

The antenna location if we're talking "Eurostyle" around 1970 was really driver front wing.

given in blue binders.....

Wow! Now we're talking my own experiences vs Blue books!
I guessed I'm sold?

But before I'm laying down with my belly upwards :-)

If possible I would ask my friends in Germany or Austria (together with all other European countries where E9 was exported to) for the opinion in this matter.

Personally I grown up with the antenna on the left front wing, but I think the antenna in the rear left wing looks cool on our E9 ;-)

My CSi Left rear, 70 2800CS Left front, 72 CSA Left front, 74 CS Left Windshield Post

My CSi Left rear, My 70 2800CS Left front, My 72 3.0CSA Left front, My very late 74 3.0CS Left Windshield Post...

Here is a photo of my Very Late (12/74) with the Antenna of the Left Windshield Post.

This Very Late Production E9 with a 12/74 Production Sticker has the Antenna on the Left (drivers side) Windshield Post.

This E9 is in incredibly Unmolested Original Condition so I would believe that this was a Factory Installed Antenna made by Hirshmann (a German co.).

The car has ALL of the factory Options including an Electric Outside Mirror and an Electric Sunroof so I would expect that the car was also ordered with a Radio and Antenna...

I think the Post is the best location for the Antenna because when up it flows with the lines of the car... There are also no holes in the fenders for water to attack.. Not that E9 bodies are affected by water!

that was an antenna used on many early 2002. mounted in different places. i always hated the window post as it cuts a big hole and weakens the roof.

I still think radios and antennas were dealer installed and that is why they can be mounted left or right front fender or even in the A pillar. My coupe had it in the right front fender. When I bought my brand new 74 2002 if I wanted a radio it would have been added by the dealer. I choose no radio as I couldn't afford one at the time. Also, US radios had a larger FM scale and this wouldn't have been installed in Germany. And you won't find a radio option printed on the Hoffman window sticker, it was added by the dealer to a small additional white sticker which would include things like cocomats, foglights and such.

Chris Radios were an Option directly from BMW...

Chris,

While most Car Dealers to save money bought radios and other optional parts from local suppliers and had them installed... BMW does show a Blaupunkt Radio (Frankfurt) on the official options list that I dragged off this site. At $145 this was allot of money back then but it would include a Speaker and the Antenna.

When I was 17 years old I worked at Mad Man Muntz and at another Stereo Shop as the installer... They would send me out to Dealers like Galpin Ford to install Radios in new cars like LTDs, Mavericks, Pintos and Trucks...

Yes, that is the Hoffman price list but I would like to see a window sticker with a radio on it. Dealers probably had to get their radios from Hoffman as well unless a customer specified another make.

Decided to install the Hirschmann at the rear left. Will adjust for a rakish angle.
