I have this junk 265 I want to take apart, but the rear case seems stuck. Cant get it separated more than an inch.

Does one have to take the front case off and a bunch of stuff off first before trying to remove the rear case?

Hi Rob. I started doing this exact thing a few years ago and got stuck where you are. You inspired me to go give it another try, and I just succeeded. Tell me if this works: Insert a screwdriver through the hole in the rod so you can "shift." Press the case parts back together enough so that you can feel the right-left spring action in the shifting again. Shift to second gear (probably by levering the screwdriver to the left and tapping the selector rod in with a soft mallet). Sliding that particular rod forward unlocks a sliding pin and allows the other rod to pull freely out of the rear case segment. You should be able to pry it all open now!

Meanwhile, inside the transmission, here are the pieces that interact. You'll notice I started by taking the front cover off first.

Closeups with the back cover removed:
Left to right along the bottom of the image are the gear selector shaft (that is, the shifter), the 5th gear selector rod, and the 1st/2nd selector rod.

Inside of the back case segment:
Middle bottom is where the selector shaft goes through. The pair of holes that are up and to the left of that are where the gear rods sit. They move fore and aft inside the holes depending on which gear you've selected.

This little pin slides back and forth and it prevents both of the rods from sliding free from the bores at the same time unless one is partly lifted out by the motion of selecting second gear.

Great stuff! Is the context of this pulling the worm gear for the speedo drive? I started to do this on my CSI transmission and after a few minutes of complexity evaluation I said screw it.

When I replaced the self machining differential rivets (with bolts) on my VW O2O trans, I had to build a handful of special tools. A case splitter which is just a steel bracket that bolts to the housing, and a large built to push on the output shaft, forcing the case part. Then also extensions for a 2 jaw pulled to get the gears off.

Eventually I’ll split my ZF boxes but that is probably 8 years from now. The clock starts now! :D

I'm good at this point. Gifted the 262 to a local friend. My G265 has the manual drive already.
 
For what it's worth the worm drive ring gear part really fought me when I took it out of the old 4-speed for use in my five speed. I did end up making a custom tool that spun onto its teeth/splines and allowed me to pull it mechanically. The pick or screwdriver trick would have been lovely but it wasn't to be in my case. Maybe Getrag changed things slightly over the years?
 
Interesting. I also used a flat screw driver through the speedo drive gear tube to get to the back of the worm gear to get it out.
 
Nice pictures. I read that carbon fiber transmission casings have been developed for Formula 1. A translucent Getrag would be great to have.
