I just bought this car. I am super excited. I am having some minor work done on it in Houston before I get it. Any recommendations for simple modifications? I was thinking about a new exhaust system that sounded great and improve performance slightly. Also I was wondering if anyone used dynomat to deaden the sound a bit. I just recently dynomated my 1970 vw bus and it makes a huge difference.

Any other ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks!!

I cut the small muffler out between the first and third muffler - a little more throaty, probably no more performance but it sounds pretty cool

Here's my thoughts - They could be applied to any old car.

In these days of rising fuel prices (which over here in the UK are making me weep every time I fill up) it makes sense to do the easy things which help economy.

So in addition to making sure the car's fully tuned up and serviced with maximum tyre pressures (I run at 35 psi front, 32 psi rear):

- Fit an electronic ignition kit: you'll get better combustion, so more power when you need it, better mileage when you don't, plus better reliability and less need for periodic tune-ups as a bonus as this will eliminate points (which are mechanical and wear out).

- Fit two K&N air filter elements in your filter housing: These are around £60 for a set here but as replacement filters are about £25 delivered you'll save in the long run, plus this will help your mileage a little as your engine can now breathe slightly easier.

- Fit some trunking between the air collector panel next to the driver's side (on a UK / Aus car) headlamps and the air cleaner housing - This will ensure your engine is only breathing in cold, fresh air and not hot, under-bonnet air. This is denser and so wil give you slightly better power / economy at lower speeds.

- Fit an electric cooling fan - The standard fan is engine driven so isn't needed when the car is moving, yet it spins away. An electric one only cuts in when needed and will also reduce under-bonnet noise a little as well as helping mileage.

Bin the standard carbs and run bike carbs! that will make the car shift and sound great too!:-D

I can't see the pics so this might be done already, but moving the battery to the trunk improves weight distribution and therefore handling, and if you use a cross-member support in the back reduces chassis flex somewhat. Also pretty straightforward.

Can you post a video of this?

Steve, I just looked back at this post. Do you happen to have a video showing how to do this and so I can hear it?

Go with the Petronix electronic ignition. All hidden inside the dist. Had mine for years on and off the track, never hiccupped once.

If you make the exhaust system deeper, louder, forget the sounddeadening stuff. My old Blaupunkt has never worked but the engine/exhaust sounds are all I need. You don't want to miss that turbine-like melody.

Only run Premium. Don't worry about co$t or mileage. I never look at the pump, never checked the mpg. It is what it is - and always less than half of those enlightened industrial democracies that partly fund National Health Care FREE for all and other suspicious, socialist welfare programs. (I am to the Left of FDR, the ADA and the ACLU)

May I keep my e9coupe membership?

I had a muffler shop do it, it took them about 10 minutes and $25 to cut it out and weld a piece in it's place. The car is on stands right now getting maintained but next weekend I can post some audio if you still are interested - it's a little louder and throatier but not obnoxiously so (at least not to me  )

+1 on the Pertonix per Steve's post, it's a set it and forget it deal, as well as using premium gas (I also now run ethanol-free premium exclusively).

And to add to Hack's suggestion, I have sprayed cavity wax/Penetrol into every internal space I could find and made sure the drains are clear. So if I do get caught in the rain, at least I have some coating in there.

Top bolt oil filter setup?

Does your car still have the original bottom bolt oil filter canister? Lots of people prefer the later style top bolt oil filter setup. That's a fairly simple modification that many coupe owners make.

Or switching to the newer style fan clutch with 8 blade fan.

Or perhaps an upgraded internally regulated alternator with higher AMP output.

Or, ...

thanks

Thanks for all the input. I really appreciate it.

Any thoughts on where to find the following parts?

Does anyone have a lead on the following parts:

-AC Fan Switch
-AC Knob
-new Motors (faster) for front window, perhaps all windows
-small rubber piece where the front window meets the rear window on top

Thanks.
