Now that I have cold AC I am having my windows tinted.... I definitely do not want the dark look, so I am looking for suggestions and perhaps some pictures of tinted coupes.

FWIW, it's 90 degrees and humid as hell here! And I will be driving my coupe...just want to make it a little more bearable.

Mine has dark tint on red paint. I am not a fan. I think that one of the most compelling aspects of any old BMW is the glass greenhouse and thin pillars. I think that the tint takes away from that. I would go with clear tint. Mine will be off as soon as the interior is worth looking at.

I removed an older tint that had been on my car when I bought it, but will be considering tinting again in the future (once my coupe is actually sitting on its tires again!). The tint I removed from my car was only on the side windows, which is an option I may consider. I share Steve's concern about the ability to properly install the tint on the rear window. Unfortunately, this is a feature of the installer (and not any particular product).

I have Huper Optik tint on my e39, and it is an excellent product. I have 40% on my windows and its very discrete. https://huperoptikusa.com/automotive/

Because they are a higher priced product, they claim to have superior installers. If I do tint my coupe windows, I will probably go with a high priced tint and use a "certified" installer in the hopes that this will improve the possibility of getting good quality work.

I had limo tint from 1983 until just 5 years ago.
Now have a 40% with uv filter and is no where near as dark.

I live in the desert. A/C not hooked up. Really no big deal unless over 100.

Some colors work better with film. My CS is silver/blk and it looks awesome.
Black, blue are also good combos.

I tried to dnld a new pic but was unsuccessful.

NV had a state law limiting film to lighter colors. But the highway patrol cars windows were to dark so they rescinded the law.

I love tint on MY car. Not for everyone, same as me!

You'll see a Forum response of mine to a prior post. In it are before and after pics of my car. Here:

is a very detailed post I wrote on a professional window tinting forum seeking folks input. This is now three years old, so there might be other films out there, but long story short, the E9's curved rear window is a nightmare for shrink-to-fit films. Mine came out darker than I would've liked, and initially I panicked, but over time it's grown on me, and I haven't gotten a single negative comment on the tint.

Since the automotive film (coating) industry is able to completely vinyl-wrap whole cars (curves, angles, et al) and/or use "thicker" Clear-Bra to cover and protect the front facia......

I highly doubt that tinting the curved rear glass will give a competent tint installer much hassle. If you're being told that, IMO you're being jerked around. Find a new and more experienced installer.

I too have tint on my rear window.

It's on there ok not perfect. It was installed by a PO.

I don't like it much but with all the glass may consider something newer and better this winter when I rebuild everything.

I have recently looked at installing a band along the top of the windshield.
When riding in the car in shorts you can feel the heat from the sun on your thighs. That very high front window lets in a lot of sun.
My AC works quite well with 45 degree temps at the grills but if car is parked in sun for a while it takes a long time to cool it down.
Dark blue interior does not help. It will be tan after the redo.

I'm in Hotlanta so some relief would be good.

there is one significant drawback to putting film on the inside of a rear window ... that is the rear window defroster. it tends to get destroyed when you remove the film. my coupe also has film on the rear window, thanks to the PO. it was not done badly ... but could have been done better

The car goes in the shop next week...I'll take before and after pics. I chose a shop that just does tint and has a lot of positive feedback online.

I haven't talked through which tint I'll use...they carry a number of different manufacturers and comparing a few on the site it seems they have the traditional darker tints and some newer and more expensive films that transmit a lot more light but still have decent heat rejection. That's the direction I am headed.
