I picked this up last week. It's supposedly out of a 6 series. An LSD with a little oil pump that is driven off one of the output shafts via a belt. It came with an oil cooler and high pressure hoses to hook it all together.

Diffs with the oil pump/cooler came on M535i's, some early 635CSi's, and most Alpina models. The 2.92 ratio suggests a turbo car, possibly an Alpina.

Thanks for the info Tony. Much appreciated. I think I'd like to try and swap out the gear set as a 2.92 is a bit tall for the track use I want out. Do the standard open diff gear sets bolt right into a LSD? Sorry for my ignorance on the subject, I'm still emersing myself in the CS. I've owned it for almost 4 years now I think, but just got around to working on it.

Thanks guys...

Scott, the innards on the sideloaders are pretty much all interchangeable. It's the ring and pinion you need, the LSD goodies will swap right over. That said, setting up a R&P is a job for a pro. Get it wrong, and the least of your problems will be noise, at worst the R&P can be destroyed. Having a diff set up is not expensive, maybe $100.

Thanks mucho much for the info Tony. I figure while I've got the unit apart and swapping gears, I might as well have the LSD rebuilt as well. Anyone know of a resource in the bay area that they trust?

There is at least one difference. The early sideloaders, through 1970, used smaller diameter bolts to mount the ring gears.

Good to know. As to getting a sideloader LSD rebuilt -- I'd check with Carl, or maybe Jim at Mesa. Last I heard the clutches and other parts had gone NLA from ZF. Tracking down parts may be the biggest challenge. It's probably worth looking into substituting/fabricating clutches, it can't be that hard to find friction material.

Diff Rebuild

Scott,

Contact Metrix Motorsport down in southern cal. They can rebuild your diff with whatever you want to put in it gear ratio wise. Optional ratios 3.91 & 4.10. They can also increase the LSD percentage by adding another disc to the carrier. Parts are available for the LSD.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping to find someone in the bay area. I just cruised down and picked the diff up from So Cal. I'll look him up though for sure.
