Hi Folks,

The ashtrays on my CSI parts car stand a good half inch proud of the door panel, unlike the trays on my 2800CS. I figured this was due to the power windows. I didn't find anything in my search. Are my assumptions correct?

Same here. I didn't know they were recessed more in other models?:?:

Yes, both the '73 I had 40 years ago, and the '74 I currently have 'wear' the proud ash trays on the doors.

I've cut the 'ash' shaker off the top center of mine, lined them with leather matching the door card and now they function well to hold small stuff like change.

i took the metal plate and vinyl off of my ash trays, replaced them with black perf metal ... and installed tweeters in the holders. i got one of Anton's consoles / armrests so that i can store stuff there if needed.

guys I have ashtrays on my 2800cs that stand proud of the door panels - at least 1/2" if not more. i also have one from the parts cache i got here in Atlanta that was from an early 2800cs that had the low seat lever (early 2800cs) ... and the ashtray from it was exactly like mine and the ones on Gary's '72 (M5bb) as i saw those at his house on Tuesday

Well I'm not really into posting pictures but I'll make an exception his time! :D Given that this doesn't seem to be a thing, I wonder if my door panel is bowing and making the ashtray look smaller. If not - For sale ultra rare low profile ashtrays! Ha!

It needs to fit under the wood, this one looks to be sitting on the wood.

Totally agree. I didn't see this until I looked at the picture of the CSI ashtray. False alarm! More importantly, my other ashtrays aren't special. :(

The ashtrays on 2270012 were also above the wood. I can't say I noticed it when I took the panels off but when I tried to put it back together, the ashtrays wouldn't fit in the cutout. I had to open up the wood by a fairly significant amount to get the ashtrays behind.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Just to add to this - When I changed my wood cappings I only then realised the ashtrays on my 69 2800cs are in a different place and a different size from the car the new cappings came from. I too had no idea there was more than one type!

My car now sports the later setup with modified door cards.
