asphalt mats in engine room?

Asphalt mats were original--

Not sure they were asphalt but--there was a factory mat that was applied to the upper inner fender surface(s) underhood. It had a subtle hexagon textured appearance beneath the painted finish applied over the material. The parts were available about 20 years ago but have long been NLA now and don't know if they have become available again. Many have chosen to omit the cladding when restoring or renewing their cars.

Reason for ommission--the cladding had been a contributing factor to rust in that area for this reason--over time the material would shrink away a couple of mm from the small vertical webs at the top of the firewall area and under the hood grills and entrap moisture from rain, car wash or any other water source. Remember I have suggested on several occasions that--"if you don't need to feed water to your Coupe avoid doing so at all costs"--i.e.--if you want it to last--just don't.

Check with CoupeKing as I believe he has located a very suitable substitute--and may be willing to sell a kit for fitment.

dynamat on Amazon is discounted

but its still crazy expensive if you want to do whole care. There must be an industrial grade substitute. How about any durable rubber with plenty of 3M spray adhesive?

Thank you blumax-san.

That was pretty much what I thought including the thoughts about rust.

But I guess one could could replace them with a modern asphalt type mat even if it does not have the hexagon pattern just to complete the look. Problem is finding a template.

I checked with W&N and they did not have them either.

Question is then: what is more original, mat without hex pattern or no mat....... ?

engine compartment seals

Industrial substitute- EPDM ( rubber) roof sheets. The product comes in several grades ( thickness) and names. ( sill sealer- put down before the first 2X4 is blted to a foundation, window seal- same thing.) Sound proofing the cabin- go for the thick.

If you want to make up the original- 15lb roof felt. Place expanded mesh over it with a peice of plywood and park your car over it! That's what we did for Porsches before they started to make it again. Stoddard- ( Porsche owns them) has floor kits, etc for 356,912, and 911 all used the same thing and bodies were made by Karmann. So if you really want it- there it is ;except you'll have to recut for your application.

On my coupe- it's pretty smooth; even when you look sideways at it.

Need a pattern- I'm sure any of us would help.....

Do you have a link for the comparable product - I found Stoddard but unsure of which item?

Underhood cladding--

Once again--suggest that you check with CoupeKing.

I usually subscribe to asking a real pro (in this case--Peter Sliskovich aka CoupeKing) who has been doing it for years when it comes to replicationg an original part--or replacement with comparable materials. I'm sure with a phone call it may reveal what you are seeking.
