Is there such a thing as an upgrade to the standard automatic (sorry for the oxymoron) that will marry to a standard 3.0 carbed motor? Later overdrive something from a 5 or 6 thats a bit more modern and still durable that fits? Thanks, Dave V. in NC

I think the 4HP22/24 will fit and work, especially if it is the early mechanical versions. The later ones were a combination of electric and mechanical controls. The one major issue I can think of, in terms of fitment, is the trans tunnel.

If your coupe is an AT now, a 5-speed OD from an E12 or early E24 will pop in relatively easy. Gets a little trickier with later model-sourced tranny's, depending on speedo drive, etc. The NICE thing about an AT to 5-speed is if your driveshaft is sound, you don't need to cut it. There are scads of little bits you need to use/get though to make the swap work.

Take a look at this link, pretty much the definitive tome on whatcha wanna do :

auto upgrade

Thanks guys. I'll be doing my "better" car with the 5 speed at some point and appreciate the link, which I will print and file, dp. I should have explained more fully; I recently bought another coupe, that is an automatic. Tranny is rotten and out of the car. I thought it might be a good time to investigate a newer or upgrade automatic, as I think it will stay an automatic for my older years, my wife, daughter, etc. (I also have the thought that considering the economy, or lact thereof, the demographics of the folks that can afford/justify a "toy" are going to be older folks that are hip-joint-challenged, so if I can put a better than original 3 speed automatic in, I might be ahead of the curve...) Thoughts?
What models used the 4hp22-24? Thanks again. Dave V. in western NC

4HP22 Conversion

The 4HP22 has a lock-up torque converter, the converter is thicker I'm not sure if the tunnel has enough room for the 4HP bell housing.
The early 4HP 1983-84 is the non-electronic type; you will also need to consider the speedometer drive. The 4HP cars drove the speedo off diff rather than the transmission.
I have heard of converting the 3.0 speedometer to a later electronic speedometer and putting and impulse sender with magnets on the driveshaft.

Because of a handicap I had to convert my manual CS to an "awfulmatic" I used a 3HP from a 1979 528I. There are some minor things you will need to do to make change, it's a fairly easy swap without too many modifications.
