Well, I just completed the final touches on my '91 M30B35 motor with carbs and attempted to drop it in today. To my surprise, the two big bolt holes on the automatic transmission don't line up with the holes on the motor. The transmission currently in the car is from an '82 733i. The bolt hole on the lower driver's side is further in on the motor than on the transmission, and on the passenger side, the motor has a metal flange where a hole could be, but there is no hole at all. There is one lower down on the block.

Do I need a different bellhousing? If so, from what can a source it?

Here are some images of what I'm up against.

Here is the transmission, which is a 1982 ZF 3HP-22 out of a 733i:

...and here is the M30B35. I've placed red dots on the image where the transmission's bolt holes are ending up:

I've been researching this a bit, and it looks like the bolt holes for my bell housing existed on M30 engines all the way through the 1988 M30B34, like in this Ebay listing:

So far, it looks like only a 4HP-22 automatic transmission will mate to this engine, but it would likely require modifying the transmission tunnel and the drivershaft length. Is there some other option that I am overlooking?

I wouldn't mind installing a manual transmission, but this will be my wife's car, and she'd really prefer an automatic. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think the non electronic HP4 transmission from 5, 6, & 733 fit an m30 block but the 3.5 is a different bolt pattern. As you mentioned using the HP4 requires modifying the tunnel (lockup torque converter) and dealing with no speedo drive in the HP4.
