1974 BMW 3.0 E9 coming out of storage. The shift worked to get it towed - into neutral It has new battery and started right up
Can the transmission fluid affect this. Please help

You have to figure out if it’s the transmission or the shifter that is stuck?
disconnect the linkage at the tranny and manually move the shift shaft on the tranny.
you will now which direction the problem lies.
my guess is the automatic gear shift parking lock is jammed.

Hi

Thanks for the input. Is there a clip under the cover of the housing that will release shifter to move freely

We are not mechanics - diagram is more involved what we can do. We can get the cover off - trying to find on net if there is a release pin.

Otherwise we will need a local BMW fixer in and around Somerville Cambridge Ma

Thanks

It can happen with automatic trans that if parked with a stress on the driven wheels (such as on a slope) that the trans (and sometimes the steering, and ignition cylinder) will lock, especially if the wheels are fully right or left. Solution is to block the front wheels and lift the rear so that the torque in the driveshaft is relieved. Had to do it for a frend's car once, worked a charm.

Suggest the parking sequence on slopes should be something like: stop the car, engage the parking brake, foot off the service brake (car may roll a few inches) and only then shift to park.

I do believe that Jim Albright's Mighty Motors still exists and they have moved from Cambridge to Somerville. Jim was the Rondel Tech advisor, his guys are still around. They specialized in vintage BMW's. Jim is the only person I knew who had a 2002 complete, on a shelf in his shop.

Follow Don’s advice, remove small screw (might be an Allan screw) from under shifter and then remove the button. This happened to me when I borrowed Carl Nelson’s 645i.

Also, if you've removed the T handle and not installed it properly the button won't work to disengage. The T handle has to be threaded onto an internal rod as well as the main chrome rod.
