I was away for a few days and car sat for about 5 days without starting. When I tried starting it turned over started and sputtered and died. Several attempts and it seems to just sputter and dies. Now just cranks. At first I thought I was out of gas, since I do not smell a lot of gas and the gauge is down but not completely. So went to station and got 3 gals. No difference. Going to pull plugs and see what they look like. Any suggestions.

Check fuel pump- look down carb(s) and push down on linkage- do you see the fuel squirt? Pour a couple of ounces of gas from the can into reach carb- if it starts that's likely your issue :-)

Good luck

Got it started. Pulled plugs they were a little wet gas smell. Cleaned and dried them off. Got more gas in the tank. A bit difficult starting, had to pump the gas but eventually started. Now starts up easily. Not exactly sure what was wrong. Out of Gas?

when i don't use my coupe for a couple of weeks, i would have to stab the pedal a couple of times to prime it. if it doesn't spark, i repeat it. usually it starts up after 4 stabs. sometimes it takes a total of 8 stabs before it starts up. for me, i would suspect the pump is getting weak. only way for now, is to keep an eye on that pump. good luck

If I don't drive the coupe for a few weeks the gas in the carbs will evaporate. It then will take quite a bit of cranking to fill the carbs again so it will start.

I do what I do with airplanes, and prime it before I crank. If it's been sitting for a week or two, I put the key on run, floor it for a one one thousand count, hit the starter and she's alive crack of the key.

Otherwise it's a lot of cranking.

i am assuming that you have a carbed cs, with mechanical pump, probably is too much of an assumption, normally is much better if you clarify it when you describe the problem, but lets think it this way

for such a setup, it is may own case, a week or even three weeks makes no difference, car will start at first attempt, but two things must be considered

my carbs have been recently renewed, so there are no or very little leaks in them, fuel does not evaporate so quickly i guess,

second, i added an anti-return valve in the fuel line just before the mechanical pump

my starting procedure in cold is aleays the same, first a milisecond press of the accel pedal to hear the butterflies clossing, then a brief kick of the accel pedal to the floor to inject the fuel from the kickdown pumps, and then remove feet from the scenario and start the car

so i would consider the anti-return fuel valve if you do not have it already,... ! ?

arde must have told you that

After more than two weeks it takes a few cranks, which I can deal with.
What is hard to deal with are neighbors and my own daughter making cynical remarks for the rest of the day about old cars waking them up that day.

That is what triggers the swearing.
