So I bought a 1970 2800CS from my best friend in August. It was his grandfather's car. Appearantly his grandpa, who was a physician, always had a handful of BMW's in the driveway. The coupe was his favorite. He had had it since the early to mid seventies (he was the second owner). A couple of years back, my friend's grandfather passed away. All the other cars were sold off, except for the CS. The coupe was driven to my friend's father's house in St. Louis. There, it sat in the garage for a couple years, as the clutch no longer worked.

Eventually, my friend's dad decided the car had to go. So I bought it and towed it back to my parent's house. The car would not start and the clutch still did not work. After a new battery, plugs, fuel filter, oil, and some fresh fuel it started right up. The car then sat in the garage til December (I go to college in Denver) with my dad warming it up every week or two.

I had a six week winter break to get the car drivable again. I lost quite a bit of time waiting for parts and was out of town for a bit of it too. After replacing the water hoses and coolant, fuel lines, air filters, clutch/pp/bearings, driveshaft bearing, exhaust mounts & gaskets, swapping bellhousings for a newer style one, and a new clutch master/slave, it was driveable again.

I just drove it around the neighborhood and I absolutely love the car. Got tons of looks from people on the street too. For now, my dad's going to use it as a daily driver for his short trip to work (when it's not wet out of course).

Thanks to everyone on the forum who help get this car running again!

I'll post pics soon too!

Great story, Max! Sounds like a pretty nice car. Does it have any rust? What a crime to let it sit outside for so long, nothing good can come of a coupe that sits outside.

Congrats for getting the old girl back on the road. I look forward to seeing some pictures.

Are you up for adoption ? The son I never had (well my daughter, 26, is a good wrench in her own right) She learned by wreck.I got fed up with suspension damage to her 123 Mercedes 280e, and would haul from ditch to shop, then hand her tools. Advise only when she got stuck. She sold that car(bent too severe to put an alignment on it .Ditch show # 4 )Her next choice, Jetta, slammed, she demanded no input from a- hole Dad on this purchase. Oh boy. On the 1st gen VW Jetta, simple, down to frame in an afternoon, a little help from Dad(only after eibach springs, to replace the torched stuff, not safe). She did the install, more or less. Teach ohm's law, i.e. 12'' subs and the like. Not to be a showstopper, we nailed some 'caps in there, 165 amp alternator, 'nuf said, those who can, do... those that can't... teach. Make your father proud.

There is actually very little to no rust on the car. Luckily it sat inside a garage, not outside. Other than a tiny bit on the spare tire well, the underside of the car only has a spot of surface rust that's about 3x3" near where the exhaust bends up to the headers. I'm going to go after that with an r.o. sander, some Por-15, and fresh undercoating this summer.

Pamp, sounds like your daughter can really wrench. My dad's not exactly mechanically adept, so I learned how to wrench via owning a 944 for five years (with some occasional help/advice from a very nice friend with a 914-6).

I'll post pics tomorrow night.

For no real reason, I didn't expect alot, but that's a great looking car. Keep her dry and love her lots. Dave V. in NC

Your 2800 CS exceeds most expectations--nice original CS

If you can convince your Father to convert to a 5 speed OD manual--it will completely change--I mean improve--its driving characteristics. Don't be in a rush to have it done by just anyone--be sure they know what they are doing.

Too bad you or your car are not in this "neck of the woods" as we have several experienced mechanics available with conversion experience--all within about a 80 mile radius. You might contact Carl Nelson in La Jolla--800-644-8184--he knows most everyone East and West of the Mississippi that are skilled in that conversion.
