Baikal 72 on BAT

Born an automatic and 4-speed converted in 2014. Looks like a lovely car. I really love Baikal.
One commenter who bought one new opines that the side grilles should be chrome. Is that true? I thought most came with the black grilles from the factory. What is the more expert answer to that? Was it color-dependent?

my understanding is that chrome is correct for the hood / side grilles. i know most pics i have seen of baikal coupes had chrome.

Interesting question! My coupe has chrome hood and side grills. I have thought about changing them to black as I think it would look cooler with the Turkis and BBS wheels with dark grey centers. But if it s really period correct to have chrome, will likely leave as is. Learn something new here everyday! :)

From the FAQ section of the forum. @HB Chris ‘s detailed list of e9 changes: 69-74:

“Hood and fender grilles begin as chromed metal, change to partial satin/matte chromed plastic in early 3.0CS production and to black plastic during production (per the Parts book: at 3.0CS 2240645 and 2250504 all dark colors now get matt chrome, all light colors now get black grilles)”

Is Baikal a light color? The VIN of discussed car (2250141) falls short.

As a Baikal owner, I wouldn’t call it a light colour. Mine is a late 73 CSi and it came to me with black grilles, but I preferred the chrome look so swapped them over.

Well, I can add that I have owned my Baikal Coupe for 39 years. When I bought it, side grilles were black. Just data. Do not know what was on this car in 1972. Perhaps others can comment what they have found on their Baikal E9s.

In the sellers defense, I wouldn't put a satin black sticker over that beautiful paint either. Correct or not.

Id upgrade to billet side grills too instead of the original plastic ones also.

Sure the paint is beautiful, but without the sticker underneath, it is very obvious that the grilles are just cosmetic. At least with a black sticker it looks somewhat like a functional vent

Agree with Minivan. We all know they are bling. But the sticker gives the illusion of form follows function. And they are Factory.
