Hello, I am new here and also the purchaser of the "Porsche" 2800CS listed on Ebay a couple of weeks back. I bought the car without seeing it (a first) and it was also my first Ebay full car purchase. I will say the guys at Cosmopolitan were good to deal with and the car is essentially what I expected. I bought it because I have always loved these cars and I have quite a bit of BMW experience after owning and restoring a 2002 tii over 30 years, owning 2 E30 M3s and rebuilding one of them including the S14 as well as a 95 E36 M3 which was a nice car but not very inspiring. My DD is a SMART car.

Well, I certainly have my work cut out for me. The outer rockers are in full Flinstone mode, I have not dug into the inner rockers yet. The drivers floor plan was replaced before, there are surface dings including the nose, the trim and bumpers need work, lord knows what happened to the interior. The windows don't work. Eerily, the wheel wells and front fender seams seem solid on first inspection but I haven't really gotten into it. Oh, and it was raining when I drove it home from the trailer.

I hope I don't dissapoint people but the plan is not to build a concours/garage queen. I kept all the comments from BAT in case I need to justify my "improvements". It will be a solid reliable car that I can drive and enjoy. I have already sourced an S38B36 and transmission so you can get an idea where I am headed. In my rebuild I will be true to the BMW heritage but not a slave to originality (hence the S38 vs. (gasp) an LS7 or even an S54). I am not afraid to experiment with new or untried approaches or fail in the attempt, that is where I derive enjoyment from cars (the trying not the failing :)).

I live and work in Los Angeles just a few miles from Coupeking but the car is in Oregon. I may have found a guy there that can help with the rust repair unless I decide to tackle that myself. He had a 300SL Gullwing in the shop he was finishing so I think he may be the right kind of guy. I will undoubtably have many questions, I am trying to read as much of the archives as possible so I don't drag everyone back through old ground. I will chime in whenever my previous experience may help. Thanks for listening- Jim

Welcome Jim and good luck with your project, lots of advise here as you probably know. Add your location to your profile so we know where you are if you need help or parts. I can delete the Seen in Ad entry in the e9 Registry if you want to enter it yourself and add any details or photos.

Thanks Chris, I updated my registration info. If you can update the registry, great. The VIN is 2280484 and I see from the title that the car came from Massachusetts (that should help with the rust). I will see if I can get the pictures from Cosmopolitan. - Jim

We're proud to spread the love. Welcome!!

Welcome to the Forum. Sounds like the makings of a rocket ship. Looking forward to hearing more about the project.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I do enjoy (for no obvious reason) the VIN number list so I am glad someone is close. On the Gullwing; I had never seen one in person and I was amazed how small the interior is, the sills must be 10" wide. It is painted what I can describe as "burnt orange" which the guy said was a factory color and it did match the unrestored dash. The German color choices always surprise me, lot of silver (obviously), white and black but then you get the occasional Smurf blue E46M3 or my personal favorite, Inka. Anyway, it turns out the owner lives in the LA area and has a matching 300SL roadster, must be nice. - Jim

So it is a real Gullwing, not a replica? I would love to see some pictures of that vehicle.
