I have 5 BBS mags From my old BMW E24 1986 Australian delivered highline. MARKINGS on all 5 wheels are BBS 8J x 16H2 ET20 mag wheels. Made is W Germany

Are these worth more or less than a genuine set of period correct CSL Alpinas ?

They are in good original condition but they have never been restored. They looked amazing on the 635 as well as the e9

The period correct genuine Alpina wheels are much more rare than the BBS 3 piece wheels - at least here in the US.

The E9 I meant. I just similar and they are slightly off and not fitting my E9☹️

As an e24 guy, the style 5's are in demand but I think about 1200 for a nice set, perhaps 1500 for yours since you have 5 of them.

There may be some confusion on what Alpinas you are referring to. 16" staggered are definitely more difficult to find than the 14" Wheels that came on the CSL and which are still available new: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=3451-EUR-09-1972-E9-BMW-30CSL&diagId=36_0366

Those close but aren't Alpinas. They are factory FPS wheels with the 'dreaded' five extra casting holes. Also 16" Alpinas in the desireable e9 offset are still relatively easy to come by.

The ET20 on the front will leave only about 5mm from the front strut I have found with a 17" wheel. Given the camber of the wheel, that will bring the 16" even closer on the front so I would check if that fits at all and think it may not on the front. I have 16x7 with ET13 that sit perfectly.

You could always change the front barrels and rear dish as they are 3-piece wheels to get a staggered setup. I am doing that with a set for my E9. I saw the post stating that a good set of style 5s can be had for 1200 but I have been searching and cannot get a nice set for that much and the 2k is the more realistic amount. I have found that genuine Alpinas command about 750-1000 more.

For me, style 5 looks sharper than Alpinas due to the nice polished dishes. Equally it may be because I have been around cars with Alpinas back in the day and now crave the alternative! Anyway, I recommend a rebuild. Plenty of parts are available out of Germany... check:

Thanks for that, I think the BBS 16 inch wheels are fetching higher prices because the flavour now is to restore your e24's, e23's and e28's. I personally really like the Alpinas but they don't look as good on the 80's bmw's. There are many more enthusiasts looking at restoring These 80's BMW's as a lot more have survived and are affordable. Many of these cars are being Restored to resemble the Motorsport versions and trying to source the genuine BBS wheels are becoming very difficult. I must admit they do look great on the e9's especially with the polished lip.

I think another place to buy the ALPINA look is the coupking

or are they basically the same as Realoem?

WISE9UY,

Can you clarify what you mean here by the wheel camber and the difference between a 16" and 17"?

Think about it this way, there is a pre-defined camber angle built into how the hub sits in relation to the strut. With the negative camber of the strut, the leg naturally moves farther away as it goes up to the top mounts. With a wheel being hollow, the bigger diameter the wheel, the higher up it is and further in it is on the strut before there is interference. So let's say on a car that can accommodate a 14" wheel at ET 20 with 6.5" width, if you step up in size, you can eventually increase the ET to bring more width toward the inside. Here is a good site to help you visualize what I am saying:

It took me a few minutes, but I get what you are saying now. Makes sense now. Ignoring the spring perch for a moment, since the strut housing is on a natural angle a larger wheel may be less likely to interfere.

Nice to perfect BBS RS (not RC's) 16" split rims will be generally fetch $1600-$2000, whereas similar condition staggered 16" Alpinas will bring $3000-$3500 all day long.

Mmm not in Europe!
The going rate for a set of mint 16" Alpinas is ALOT less. Ignore the asking price by the chancers, see what they actually go for!
