Are there such things as shops that will let you do your own bead blasting using their equipment? I've got some engine components to clean up. I'm in L.A. area.

I was doing a web search and found a place called Rennsalear, sounds like the DIYers dream garage for rent. Lifts, shop equipment, seminars. Too bad it's in upstate NY.

Anyway, are these things common and does anyone know of something in So Cal?

Rennsalear Polytechnic Institute (RPI) is a College in Troy NY. Students have a co-op type facility where they can can work on their cars. I don't think it's open to the public.

Even though I've paid, and will be paying these guys thousand$ for years to come, I won't get to turn a screwdriver in their facility.

My senior finally graduates this year (fingers crossed).

Community college shops

Your local community college may have a body shop training program. If you enroll for some minimum amount of classwork, you can (with instructor approval) get in and use what are sometimes quite nice facilities.

'course, finding the time is another matter. Moreso if you only want to do odds and ends. Maybe you can buddy up to someone in such a program?

Check in the yellow pages. We have "U Blast It" operations in Calgary -anything from cars to engines. I'm sure the larger (500,000) cities near you might as well.

If you have a compressor then a small cabinet blaster is under $200. It's on my list to buy.

Any thoughts on what category might produce some results. I've tried lots of searches in online yellow pages, but it's proving hard to separate equipment sales/rental (i.e. to use at home) from a shop I can take it to and do it myself. Also tried just finding places that rent lifts by the hour (which I may also need somewhere down the road), figuring they'd have other shop equipment too, but I guess I haven't hit on the magic combo yet.

In the Calgary Yellow Pages under Sandblasting.

"Consolidated Compressor - Do It Yourself Sandblasting" They lists all types of abrasive media with seven stations available.
