My 265 Getrag makes a very slight noise when sitting at a light in neutral. As soon as I step on the clutch the noise goes away. So I figure it’s worth taking a shot at changing the bearing on the input shaft and see if that cures the problem. Does anyone know the part number for that bearing or an alternative source besides the dealer ? I have no idea what year car it came from (and that is a problem with using the dealer) because it was an eBay purchase but I’m absolutely sure it’s a Getrag 265. As always any input is much appreciated :D. ~ John Buchtenkirch

Does the sound get less when the car warms up?

One way for sure is to pull the old one and match the number on it - likely it was a common size bearing. The issue will be pulling the bearing - and finding the right ($$$) puller that is long enough to go over the shaft to reach the bearing.

Had the same issue on by 265 install, slight noise when in neutral, clutch depressed, noise goes away or very slight. I replaced the input shaft beating and cured the problem.

John,

I'am fixing my Getrag 262 4 speed now and the two main bearing of my gearbox are a 6306 and 6305 bearing. The 06 is for the drive shaft, the 05 for the countershaft. I actually don't know if they are the same like yours. Maybe you can compare them on bmwfans.info and see if they have the same dimensions. You can get them at the BMW dealer, but both bearing are standard industrial bearings. You can get them almost everywere. Just look on the internet.

Are you sure your clutch release bearing is good? This is a classic symptom of one that is going south.

Despite the work to get at the bugger, if you lay if flat and pry lightly with two screwdrivers at 180 degrees, it will pop apart. Then you clean and regrease it, reinstall the bearing, trans and all that, and off you go!

Otherwise, with the trans apart, take the bearings to any industrial supplier and they shoudl be able to match them from the numbers on them, or using a mike to size them. As stated above, should be common and readily available.
