Bearing? Which bearing?

So, weather-wise, we had a break between the windstorm and the rain, and I took my Coupe out for a Sunday drive. Was fabulous and I was reminded that because I don't drive it daily, or often enough, once I get behind the wheel, I sometimes hear things that make me wonder if something is amiss. Latest, after about 2500 rpm, straight line, foot on accelerator, I can hear a bearing whine from the rear of the car. Not an angry bearing sound, just a whine. When I take foot off of gas pedal, whine stops, then under load, it returns. Anyone here have a hunch, which bearing (s) may be speaking to me here? Thanks, Mike.

Pinion bearings looseness causing slight change in ring to pinion contact which results in a whine Some may say a different oil may help but it doesn't depends on how loud it is and how much you want to put up with

Thanks, Rick

Ah, thanks Rick. Good point. I only seem to notice it after an especially long time between drives. Sound not that obtrusive, but was curious. Appreciate the input as always. Mike

Simply change gears or drive faster or slower…!!

Your gears are worn. Nothing really helps.

I drove my 2002 for about 25 years after I moved to Seattle from the Monterey area.
I'd also drive it on occasion this time of year - when the weather was ok and the roads were clear.

During these winter drives, I would also hear things that I didn't remember hearing when I drove the car in the warmer months.
I would take the car out again in the spring to see what is/was going on with what I heard earlier - but I never could get things to repeat.
I figured it was cold in the winter -and parts of the car would not warm up like they do in the summer - so they (in my case) behaved differently.
I did not find any issues - so I didn't fix anything.

I'd be patient and see what things sound like in the summer before you make any decisions on what to do... My thoughts anyway...

Great input Kevin! I like it. Yes, Sunday was only 8C, sunny, but pretty cool. And, I already started down the rabbit hole to see what it would take to replace this diff, and would prefer to, well, not. I know it would lead to all kinds of "while you are in there" stuff to replace, and have decided to wait until Spring, as you suggest, and perhaps just change oil. ;) Thanks!

Cheapest fix is noise cancelling headphones...

or saw dust & 140w. I had a shop teacher that said that they used to put STP in worn out differentials. Not sure how they got it in there, that stuff is thick.
Been thinking about that. I agree, how to pour thick, viscous STP into....anything? Let alone how does anyone get sawdust into that small opening. Interesting. Hmmm
But those were the days. ;)
