My Coupe came with a Blaupunkt Berlin in a Box. It is kinda neat with the control stalk and dictation microphone, but more an 80's piece suitable for a Porsche or 635i, so I decided to go for a Simpler Stereo, the Becker Europa II.
Originally I was going to put it in my 72' 2002, but the Coupe gets first dibs from the parts inventory. I think this will be a good choice in a Stereo, as you can hook an iPod up in it's auxiliary Input and it will switch to it automatically when it gets a signal. . I will most likely sell the Berlin. Will probably hook the Europa up through a small 4 way Amp (Hifonics Europa) and use the current Kick panel speakers and 6X9's in the rear deck.
To install the head unit, I got a little frustrated trying to get the small screws in the bottom plate all lined up, so I decided to try something different. Industrial grade velcro (Available at Home Despot) to tie the shelf to the side supports. I want something that is quick to remove and get to the wires.
First I put the side supports on loosely and dropping low.
then I put some paper between the plate and the Velcro.
Then slide the head unit shelf in , push up on the side supports, tighten them and slide the paper out. The unit is in very firmly.
I am pretty happy with the period look and aesthetics. My interior is done other than the headliner and some Coco mats like Stevehose has. Am also thinking of mounting some gauges below the head unit with a drawer slide mechanism. that way I can tuck them in when I want the car to look entirely period stock.
