Hi guys,

You just never know what is around the corner in this hobby.

After having my Zeniths professional rebuild over the winter months and replacing all my Hella lights I was finally ready to enjoy the first , be it scares , sunshine. The old girl just is a dream to drive and couldn't have been more happy.

Until a few days ago that was. All of a sudden I noticed a drop of fluid under the car dripping of the engine support at the height of the driver seat. Following the trace back I ended up in the wheel arch and thought it was overflow from the cooling fluid that was recently topped of. After a few more trips it however didn't stop and I also noticed that the first 5 cm from the coolant overflow line up to the engine support were completely dry so it in fact wasn't coolant fluid.

After a lot of searching I finally found the culprit in a location I never would have expected it. What was dripping off the support was steering oil, coming from a hole in the container itself. Exactly in the position where the brake fluid lines touch the container, effectively hiding it from sight and at the same time blocking the hole.

As the pictures below show the container looks brand new but was in fact rusting from the inside to the outside. Not really the end of the world in terms of problems I know but try finding a new/replacment container. They are no longer available at BMW and I also couldn't find a single one on Ebay, neither in Europe nor in the US.

In the end DQ managed to find me a spare with a friend of his in Spain. So going through the search myself I like to think that whenever you have the opportunity to put such a container as a spare aside you should consider doing so. It for sure will save you a lot of time searching for one if you ever need one.

Frightening this key part is not available now......I just wonder with E9s and even 2002's becoming more valuable, plus having such a massive following nowdays, will BMW or other BMW part sellers start adding missing parts to their catalogues? It's so stressful when key parts can't be bought easily. No such problem with any old 1970's Porsche or any old AR.

Hi guys,

Like I wrote I'm awaiting my spare from DQ but in the meantime also did some more searching myself. Found one in Holland in worn condition the guy wanted €250 + 30 for shipping for it.:(

Then I contacted somebody else via a Belgian website who was offering BMW E9 engine parts. Just asked if he maybe had a spare servo fluid container and he did. The good man wanted €25 for it. Today I drove down ad secured it. Also in need of some refurbushment but I'll sleep better knowing that I have one lying in stock.

I bet you could cut down the taller E24/e28/etc container. The diameter is identical.
