Black plates were only used thru 1969. 1970 saw the advent of the blue plates.
Yeah, and good luck finding 2,500 to pay up front and wait for others to pay to reach the minimum. You can already buy the yellow and the black plates on eBay, the state wants in on the action. Adding blue plates would be nice however.
Can we register the plates we buy from Ebay? Also I have always wanted to paint my license plate blue/yellow to give it the original look, can this be done and is it legal? I have the much newer white plate.
It is not legal to paint your plates in California. Plus, your newer embossed text is a different font if I recall correctly.

You can register eBay plates up through the Black plates of 1969 but they must be clear with the DMV and you have to have the correct year sticker which matched the year of the vehicle. I have seen seven letter plates and even blue plates painted Black but they look weird and as David says it is illegal but don't know if you would ever get pulled over. CA owns the plates, not the vehicle owner, and they have clamped down on reproduction plates. Can't even get them from licenseplates.tv anymore for CA only. I have white/current personalized plates that I then had made in Blue to place on the coupe as these were available in early 70's and are period correct.
