My engine Block looks to be rebuilt and is painted Blue. Did any prominent engine builders (such as Korman or fingers crossed Alpina ever paint blocs Blue??

Bob,

Korman does paint their engine blocks (med / dark) blue. so does Tony Salloum at VAC motorsports and his a (lighter / brighter blue) ... but Tony primarily makes newer racing engines. how dark of a blue is it? the pic below is a VAC engine

my guess is that you might well have a Korman engine. i had great experience w/ their engine in my 2002.

That would be good if it was a Korman engine. On the Block it says 3.0/3.3, so that is the next question to answer.

I suggest you try these:

1. The i.d numbers on the pad above the starter cross referenced to Realoem or such site.

2. The right side of the block is the casting date near the mount. ( Mo/Yr.)

3. Compression test to determine what you MAY have as far as pistons and ratio.

4. Clean the balancer in search of markings made by the machinist that rebuilt it if he left a clue to a possible stroker.

They all say 3.0/3.3.

Chris, neither of my 3.0 Bavarias said that. Both were 72's. WHen I went to put a 3.3 crank into one of them, I had to do a lot of grinding to get the clearance to make it work. Ended up grinding through to the oil Galley, which caused a lot of extra work.

Will do, Thanks.

My block was replaced from BMW sometime in the past, it has both, but I thought that was always the case. It can mislead one into thinking they have a 3.3.

Pull the rear cam cover off the head and read the etching.

I suppose this thread will really give few answers as to who built my engine, but here is a shot of the colour. I do hope to touch it up, so if anyone knows the likely shade, that would be useful. (i.e. Chev engine Blue) Now that I look at it, it is not far off the Blue in RS Porsche's answer.

Hate to be a spoil sport, but there are many blue engines out there. Ford is the likeliest candidate, but as you may note from the linked chart, it does not have a monopoly on the color. Several machine shops I have patronized used blue, red or gray paint depending upon its relative availability and cost. I have used it myself - depending upon my mood and what was within reach http://home.comcast.net/~gtopercy/enginecolors.html

Will do, thanks. MMercury, I think you are right about the Ford Blue. I might just paint it all Black if I end up getting much of the components out of the way this winter.
