I was reading something on first fives....does the stock BMW 2002 shift lever make a good short shifter for a big six car?

I actually have one and would probably sell it if someone is interested, or on the 2002 board if not.

Thanks,

MF

I believe it's the 320i that makes a suitable short shift, at least I hope so because that's what I am about to try.

IMHO, The UUC short shift kit with dogbone (Dssr? option) Is the way to go.

Very satisfying on every shift.

Shanon,

since the UUC website does not clarify which products of theirs is correct for an e9 coupe ... care to clarify what works for our cars? any difference between a stock 4 speed or a 5 speed?

Search board for 'UUC kit', old member 'TJ' had an excellent write up with pics.
IIRC, its the same kit for e12s and e24s. Guys at UUC should be able to assist.

I believe VSR used Z3 shift linkage for my 5 speed install, a call to VSR1.com and Chris Langston should be able to give the part numbers.

I can verify that the UUC + DSSR kit is very great. Just be sure to get the trans side shifter bushings and replace them as well.

received the short shifter by Mo

here is it,

looks good, fits`perfect on a stock 3.0 cs 71

crucial is the type of shift rod, mine is not like the one in the picture, i have a sort of "Y" bar that Works perfectly in this 2002 shift lever

thank you Mo,

ps, sorry for the photo orientation

Looks Great DQ

That looks great....I am glad you are able to put this to good use.

Your pictures are excellent as well....may I ad that there is a threaded shift sleeve you can use for your next project....I personally had a round wooden knob on that sleeve (but is was very old and brittle)

Agree, the UUC is a nice system. Just call them to get what you need. Only caveat is that the shifter rod top is slotted and not threaded, so you can't use the old style knobs.

I have had a UUC in my coupe for 10+ years. Love it.

Haven't tried yet although it appears that it will as the linkage rod connection below the ball is a little lower than stock and the lever is bent above the ball toward the driver a little to hopefully make room for 5th gear, will post findings during the install, I am currently in the knowledge and parts aquisition phase.

Stevehose: so did the 320i shift lever work?

Just curious

Does anyone notice the "gates" getting wider with these mods? Longer pivot point also means longer radius to travel before the right gate angle is achieved. Doesn't it?

Hope more is posted on this improvement. Right now shifting my 4 speed is like stirring spaghetti sauce. Wonder if using a 320/2002 shifter with new bronze bushings would be enough improvement without buying the DSSR....?

I dont think the 320i shifer will fit your stock 4 speed because it is different below the ball where it connects to the linkage. I am doing a 5 speed conversion so it will be going into an e12 linkage.

If your 4 speed is sloppy consider changing the 4 shift tower bushings, the ball socket bushings, and the bushings that attach to the linkage rod below it. That made a big improvement on mine.
