Does anyone know if the two 3.0 CSi cars with factory automatic transmission and the four 2800 CS cars with a complete stainless steel body that were produced, have survived?

After consulting my small BMW library, I can add the following info:

The two 3,0 CSi with factory automatic transmission were produced in 1972

As for the stainless stell cars, there were only three 2800 CS in stainless steel built. They were built in 1969 and together with the company Thyssen and had the following German registration plates:

D-EW 700
D-EW 325
D-EW 225

As far as I have found out, they were unpainted with dark (black?) leather interior and had an extra wing mirror on the front left wing.

One car was crashed at an early stage and an artist wanted to rebuild the car in order to make it to the first art car. Due to unforeseen circumstances the project was not completed and the car stauyed as CKD (Completekly-Knocked-Down).

The other two stainless 2800 CS cars were used on the road for about five years time before one car was sold by the German company Auto-Becker without any further trace.

The third car was moved (with 125 000 km on the clock) to the German Museum's car department in Münich

So the two original questions still remains;

1. anyone who knows what happened to the two 3.0 CSiAs?

2. anyone who knows what happened to the 2800 CS in stainless steel that was sold by Auto-Becker?

Very interesting.

I would advise you to contact Mobile Tradition in order to check your VIN. If it's one of the two CSis with factory automatic transmission you have a really rare car. Please inform about the outcome.

Cheers

I sent an email to Mobile Tradition, but I'm not clear on their website procedure for ordering a certificate. There's no place on the fax form for a credit card number. Do they contact you later for that information? Would it be better to go through a dealer?

Also, where do I find the engine number?

Thanks.

If I remember correctly, I requested the certificate via the fax form. After receiving the certificate, MT sent me an invoice (which I paid via IBAN bank transfer).

However, this was several years ago, maybe they have by now improved their payment procedures in order to allow credit cards.

you do NOT need to purchase the certificate to get the info from BMW mobile tradition. there is an email address (guys: anyone know it?) to which you can send in what info you do have (e.g., VIN#). bmw will then reply with whatever info they have on your vehicle (original color, manufactured date, delivery destination, etc.).

in the past, there was no charge for the email inquiry.

I sent an email last night to the address listed on the M-T website under "Contact Mobile Tradition" ([email protected]). I also filled out the fax certificate request form (55 Euros!) but haven't sent it. I'm not sure how to parse the fax number given: +49(0)89/382-24765. It's been a long time since I called anyone out of the country. I'm such a rube. I'll see if they respond to the email.

Just on the off chance of finding some assistance I called my local dealer, who had never heard of the certificate program.

The name at MT sounds familiar. I'm sure he will answer you. When calling MT in Munich, you you should skip the 0 in the Munich prefix (i.e. dial 0049 89...).

The MT Certificate is always nice to have together with a collector's car but, as said on this forum before, not necessary if you just want some data about your car.

Oh, and CSL....

Where in Sweden are you located? I have been visiting for the last 8 years and have spent some time in Stockholm. Very nice town. Spotted some nice coupes around as well.

Hej do, John H.

Regarding MT's response to Email queries, I had had them run a couple E9 VIN and motor serial numbers, they replied for free in less than a week.

Reply from Mobile Tradition

Dear Mr. Porter

we act on BMW Mobile Tradition behalf, Mr. Georg Blumoser.
To the best of our knowledge, just two BMW 3.0 CSI A vehicles were produced in february 1972 on a trial basis.
But they were not sold officially.
Your BMW 3.0 CSI, Ident. Nr. 2263248, was not produced until summer 1972.
On the other hand, it was possible to receive a rebuilded new car from the delivering importer, if it was a client´s special wish.
This was naturally not true to the original.

Best regards

Georg Lutz

Y'all oughta know this

"Build sheet" data, such as it is, can be obtained via email at no cost from BMW by sending an inquiry with your VIN to:

[email protected]

This has come up many times in the past and here we go again. They don't give much, but it's free, from the source. They'll tell you that your (VIN), was (color) and was built in (month), (year) and originally delivered to (usually Hofmann Motors for USA cars).

Any you don't have to speak/write German to make the inquiry.

Old thread, but still interesting.
When i bought my E9 a lot of parts came with it. An extra csi engine with an automatic transmission on it. The engine vin is 4341234. Guess it comes from a converted car then?

2. anyone who knows what happened to the 2800 CS in stainless steel that was sold by Auto-Becker?
Don't know if this is still of interest. The car was stored for many years in the Saarland region, I guess, and later restored. Shortly after it was presented at the Techno-Classica in Essen. Should have been in 2015, on behalf of the BMW Coupé Club. The Coupé Club people must know where it is. Very likely it has changed hands at least once since then. About ten days ago a good friend said it might be for sale again but I don't know anything about the details.

That's right. The address that has worked for years now is: <[email protected]>. Usually you'll get a reply from a gentleman Mr. Harz. Although this is an old thread: Kai Jacobsen works somewhere there, too, but is not responsible for historic vehicle information. Georg Blumoser was also a nice guy, I remember him as head of the parts service. Not sure if he is retired now. Georg Lutz is the former president of "my" Club, the BMW E3 Club. He owns a workshop and works closely with BMW. Georg has a vast knowledge about both E3 & E9, usually everything he says is accurate. He is not working at BMW, however.
