BMW built a sleek-looking electric car in 1972 that was way ahead of its time

Very cool. When I worked at HP a couple of my friends there were developing a controller for an electric vehicle. This was around 1990 and they were doing this on the side, not for HP. Since we were BMW guys they used a '69 2002 as their test vehicle, which I ended up with years later and now is my son's car with an M20 in it. The deck lid we have for the car still has formed vents in the sheet metal for ventilation for the batteries.

I feel very conspiratorial today, when I test drove the i8 the young sales guy gave me the same pitch that BMW pioneered electric cars since the 70s. Nonsense, pioneering electrical cars is about battery chemistry and great electronics. Putting as many lead acid batteries in an existing platform for 37 miles at 30 mph and keeping it a secret is a sad PR stunt.

Facts:
- the 1602 has the anti-aerodynamic shark nose, why would you do that in an electric car?
- the range scale is not linear showing 20% about the middle of the scale creating the illusion the battery is draining slowly at first
- Marathon runner 615 behind the car appears to be wearing no pants

Nope, he wears pants...
