I was at my BMW dealer yesterday and checked to see if BMW still makes the radiator for my car. The parts person stated that there is a listing and it is still available. Does anyone know if this radiator part number will be a direct fit for my 1972 3.0cs, non A/C, four speed, & Euro car? BMW 17 11 1 102 866 . Thanks in advance.

At $420 from Maximillion + shipping it will be less expensive and more effective cooling to re-core your original one (if you still have it) with triple core/more fins per inch than buying the old 2 core style. How much does the dealer want?

John,

That part number shows up on realoem as the radiator for a cs. As an alternate, your radiator can be recored to a three row core and increase your cooling capability by using your existing radiator so it looks stock.

Nows the chance to upgrade to a spin on fan clutch and water pump. Do you have a fan shroud? I have a stack of the 3 core radiators that I have removed because I upgrade cars to the later fan, pump, clutch, radiator and install a shroud.

SSF had them on special 2 months ago- 120 bucks?

I use a 2 row with a spin on fan clutch/water pump combo with shroud. Fan clutch from Napa Auto. I install black 9 blade fans. You need to swap over to asymmetric bolt hole pullys and if you drive hard I install a 130 mm pully.

hmmm...

The alternative, if you're not concerned with exact match to original, is the E12 582i radiator in aluminum-plastic for $202.26 from carstuff.com or thepartsbin.com. I have not done this - yet.

$120 is a very attractive price, but is that the core or complete?

SSF is a wholesaler and thus not accessible to most of us. Do I assume you would resell to group members at that price (plus shipping)?

My old 2-row copper is just fine but I can't seem to solder the tank seam effectively, thus my interest in a change. I run a original red five blade fan and no AC. I've had to replace plastic tank rads in several other cars, and my own, so I know they do not last forever.

No parts business for me- I'm a wrench at heart.

Thanks for all of the feedback and info on this item. I am getting the radiator from my loacal dealer for $378 and I also am getting the fan clutch from them as well as this is still available. They even had the blower fan avaialable so I ordered one as well for $199. I replaced the water pump a couple of years ago along with the thermostat, all of the hoses, factory clamps, red fan, and bleeder screw/bolt. While the radiator is out I will replace the fan clutch at this time. No sense in spending $400 to get a radiator recorded when one can go new on this item. I will store the original radiator with the rest of the worn out parts.

If it's re-cored with 3 rows instead of stock 2, and with more fins per inch it will be 25-30% more efficient than the new one from the dealer. Technology improvement. With the heads of these motors cracking like they can due to overheating, I went for the most cooling possible, and the temp gauge confirms it.

Thanks for the update. The car has a 79 casting on the head already. Someone in Italy has changed the head out on it to the newer style. So I should be set.

your goal would be a 1982 or later head to be a 2nd gen head with the better design.
2nd gen has only an exhaust side coolant passage between the cylinders and no intake passage. [go figure]
