Hi
I am needing to rebuild my 1974 E9 engine due to excessive smoking, but not a huge amount of oil consumption.
I am wondering if anyone has had any interaction with VSR1 in Bedford NH?
I see their ad in the Ultimate Classic BMW magazine and would like any opinions of their BMW expertise.
If I am having an engine rebuilt, I want to make sure that whoever does it is qualified to do so.
If anyone has any recommendations for a place in or near Maine PLMK
Thank You,
Bruce in Maine

VSR is well known and among the best you will find for coupe work. Mario has only done a a small amount of work for me, but he provided some advice to me when I was shopping for my car and I have toured his facility a couple of times. Also, I know several of his loyal customers and have seen a lot of his work.

Dirk DeGroen, President of the BMW Classic Car Club, showed his CSL at the Hilton Head Concourse two weeks ago. VSR just finished Dirk's car.

VSR built a CSL for Chris Auty (who is no longer with us) that took second place at the Quail in 2016. Chris enjoyed working with Mario so much he had Mario do several cars for him, including three very rare Frua designed GLAS/BMW cars that I saw when they were finished. Here's Chris' CSL coming off the truck we rented to carry our cars to California in 2016:

Andrew Wilson "Athena" is a car that pops up everywhere, from Maine to NH to Monterey to Lime Rock to Pittsburgh, to the Vintage, etc, etc, etc. Mario did Andrew's car. Here's Andrew's car next to mine at Lime Rock:

Then there is Stan's Great White, Tod Bryant's coupe, Dwayne Sword's car, Tom Samuelson, the list goes on and on. All of these guys have spoken highly of Mario and his shop.

Bruce, get on Mario's calendar. make an appointment and drive over and meet him. you won't be sorry. i was in the area and met up with Mario and Andrew drove Athena over to join me. seeing the work that is done in that shop is awesome.

there is a reason that the FAQ - Top Sources thread lists a couple of people for engine work - Mario (on the east coast), Carl Nelson and our good friend @sfdon (on the west coast) as the top 3, followed by Korman + Metric Mechanic. Don built my engine, Mario built a good friend's s14 in his e30 m3 (it was perfect).
