I have two sons at UC/Boulder who share a 1998 Nissan Pathfinder. Hoping there is someone here local to Boulder (I am in MA) who can recommend a reputable and honest mechanic who can do some work on it.

two ? sons?

and do these highly edumacated young fellers know a wrench from a hammer? Let 'em learn by doing, and use internet resources to help. A set of sockets, a few screwdrivers, a combination wrench set will go far when mixed with a little practical knowlege and some experience.

Of course if the contemplated repair is major, perhaps it's best left to a pro... they should be able to find such themselves. It's part of life.

Were they girls... well that's what boyfriends are for.

what's up with that??

A little bewildered here at the responses. Tod expresses a legitimate request and alas fellow coupsters not only rag on him, but on his sons? Now thats not coupster friendly. Not everybody (me included) have the talent or time to turn wrenches. Besides, we don't even know the extent of the mechanical issue. Sorry I can't help Tod; but if I knew of somebody in CO I sure would!

college boys, and they can't solve a mechanical problem on a 98 truck.

Not my boys. Sorry, I'm with honolulu.

Yes agree I think maybe yous both shares, how you say, same big EGO

I've got to come to Tod's defense here. He has reached out to a community he trusts for some help and gets lambasted.

Both of you guys should really offer up an apology. Your comments were completely out of line.

A partial list of the many things that 79aggie's boys can do that you can't:
1.) Plan your estate
2.) Perform knee surgery with only a rock, duct tape, and a broken ball-point pen
3.) Throw for seven different pitches, including a mean slider
4.) Fill in for one half of an men's 4X100 freestyle relay team
5.) Dance like Fred Astaire
6.) Finish the Sunday Times' crossword before lunch
7.) Clone themselves
8.) Levitate
9.) Solve any and all mechanical, structural, or electrical problems on a '98 truck
10.) Transcendental Meditation

I empathize with you Tod. Mine was at RPI for Aeronautical Engineering. He had a 320i bucket I thought we could bond over. BIG mistake. My favorite quote from him as he was under the hood...."The most useless thing in this car is me!".....he knew his limitations. He's now being paid pretty well to do research.

Good luck in CO!!!

sons and their education

IMHO--real life stories to consider:
After 65 years of being around auto, farm equipment, shipboard repair & aviation repair & maintenance I have come to the confident belief that:

Every son & daughter should have at least a one semester course in automotive mechanical systems, maintenance & repair of same to have at least a fremework of knowledge as to "how they work" for very good practical & financial reasons--some of which are:
1) to not become completely at the mercy of mechanical shop(s) that may rip them off
2) it is still years before most can move about without relying on other than their automobile as their primary means of transport
3) as part of responsibility (there is that strange word from my generation) to self and others of the ownership & safe operation of a mechanical missile that must be in a state of repair to "go & to stop" safely and reliably
4) to simply gain an appreciation for proper care and upkeep of a major cost item in every persons budget.

First hand example--I have two nephews who upon spending time with us and actually helping me clean & maintain my small group of older BMW's--an '02, an E-3 and the BLUMAX--they became very interested in their quality, performance and other qualities of the cars. While both in college in Tennessee they searched out a dry bodied 2002 here in CA and asked if I would evaluate it for them and ship it East for their use. Done--it was one of the dirtiest cars ever seen with dirt accumulated for its life, tired motor, poor paint, seals and fair interior it was none the less an original that was in need of at least another $3,000 in repairs to return it to the fine condition it deserved. After dealing with correcting safety issues the '02 was shipped to them where they used it for a year while sdding oil approx. every 200 miles. I urged them to enroll in an automotive class to get the benefit of learning how to--they finally got the message and have since souced out many parts, installed same, re-built the motor under supervision & now have a very credible--unique set of wheels for their area & the confidence that they will not be at a loss or completely puzzled as to needs of their steed--this last "gained confidence" is as MC touts in their ads as--a Priceless benefit that will last!

?

Well, gee, what started as a simple request has reduced to a complete shitstorm culminating in a rant from Murray. This was what I would expect for responses over on Mye28, but not here.

Actually, my older Son is VERY mechanically inclined but the issues with the Pathy seem to be transmission related, which is not his forte.

Sorry I even asked.

Hi Tod,

I have a 2000 Nissan SUV which likely shares many of the same parts. I've torn apart and rebuilt my coupe but messing with the Nissan for some reason I find intimidating... :?

When things have come up for the Nissan, I discovered a fairly active Nissan owners community/club on the web. You and your boys might start there to locate (google?) a regional Nissan 4x4 owners club and see who they suggest. Boulder I'm sure has more than a few SUVs around. An off-road/4wd specialty parts supplier in the area might also be able to recommend a good shop they trust for installing their bits.

HTH and I'll ask my local Nissan group if they can recomend someone in the Boulder area.

Boulder

Thanks, Shanon.

I appreciate the suggestions. I was just trying to cut the learning curve on shops available in Boulder and posted what I thought was a very innocent question. Apparently not!

Allow me a Murray length response (no offense, Murray, I enjoy your posts):

This board was started 5-6 years ago following some shenanigans over on the Roachfly E9 forum. Charlie was up to his tricks and pissed off a bunch of folks with his lies and deleting posts on a couple of Roachfly boards. At that time, the same sorts of issues were happening over on the Roachfly E28 board (like some of you, I have an E28 5er also). Some of the E28 braintrust had already left and started a new board which remains very active today.

I knew the fellow who hosted the new E28 board at the time, contacted him and he agreed to host a new E9 board on his server for free and so started E9Coupe.com. I got the URL, paid for it (and have to this day) and contacted Dan G who then did the lion's share of the sysadmin work (OK, all of it) behind the scenes to get the board up and running. Kudos to Dan G!

This board has flourished since then, I think we are in year 6 or 7, and has been relatively devoid of threads like these. Chicane pissed off some folks a couple of months back, but other than that, the thread topics are on point, helpful and there is a strong sense of a supportive community here which reaches across the globe. There are also A LOT of people who just view the board (Hello lurkers!) but do not post.

Compared to other boards, the users here are pretty tame and respectful of each other. For those of you who are on the MyE28 board, you know what I mean...

It is my hope that the board will continue to have its strong sense of community in the future which is why we went "out on our own" in the first place. I'll write off this thread and some of its responses to a couple of guys having a bad day (attacking someones kids really isn't cool). I'm not going to engage in a my-kid-is-better-than-your-kid debate. Time to move on.

I know there are people here from the Boulder area who have not posted a response to the actual question. I hope they will. PM me if you prefer.

I am about 50 miles from Boulder in Littleton CO and have tried to find a reference for you without success. However if your sons can make it to Englewood which is about 40 miles, (look for US 85 aka Santa Fe Drive and US 285 aka Hampden Ave on a map) I know a very good very reputable shop called TPR run by Tom Shpakow and he can get things sorted at a reasonable cost. He does all the work himself as he has tired of being responsible for reworking employee mistakes. Good Guy!
