I am very sad to write that South Bay E9 guru, Boyd Fechner, passed away on October 18th. He was 84. I met Boyd 15 years ago, by way of Carl Nelson, when I first started my own coupe journey. From the start, he was an amazing mentor, a tireless raconteur, and a character of epic proportions. If you met Boyd you never forgot him. Working out of the one car garage of his San Jose home , he fashioned complex rust repair patches from flat stock and restored coupes to pin-straighness. While his paintwork started to suffer slightly over the past three years, his metal working skills never diminished (he called himself The Master Metal Masher). We would often confer for hours on the best approaches to the latest coupe restoration issue. I will miss him.

Did not have occasion to meet him, but spoke with Boyd on the phone more than once. Seemed like a gracious and very knowledgeable guy.

Even though there seems to always be ongoing interest in the e9 form, the experts from the days of their birth do finally fade away -and we are all poorer for it.

Rust in peace.

Very sad to hear this. He and I spent countless hours poking around my 2 e9's evaluating the necessary repairs and deciding on a potential paint color for the project car. Incredibly nice guy with great stories about the good old days of BMW history.

I am so sorry to read this about my old friend, Rest In Peace Boyd.
