I need to remove and replace the roundels on the c-pillars of my 73, how is the best way to remove them, do I need the headliner on the inside of the pillar out or do they come out from the outside? I have looked at the parts scan and it looks as if you gently pry them out from the outside but is there a trick? I am worried about damage. Advice please. Thanks David

i don´t know exactly the type of emblems that you have in your car installed, at a certain date the original screwed emblems were changed by a simple "clipping" version

if you are going to change them you will not be worried of marking them, so you should try to use an screwdriver to take them away from outside, be careful, if you note a big resistance to take them out, stop, for sure they will be the old type and you will have to dissassemble the rear lateral trim panel, and unscrew two nuts

if your replacement is of a "clipping" type, you will be very angry of removing the trim panel only for dissassemble operation, i will give you a trick to avoid this:

you will like to remove the emblem, but i assume that you don´t mind to destroy it, so my advise is to use a special hollow drill to cut two discs from the emblem, those discs will be the attachment points of the long screws that go inside the sheet metal and into the car.
when you do this, the rest of the emblem will fall out, and then you can easily remove the screws out, getting the 2 clean holes prepared for the new emblem

ask me if you have any question and i will prepare you some pics explaining it

good luck

remark: where did you get the new ones from ? can you post a couple of pics ?

Let me get a couple of pictures tonight, the car was made in May 1973, the replacements came from Maximilian, using the chrome surround and the current enameled roundels from the original if the will go back together that way. Tx

It's been awhile since I removed mine, but I'm almost positive they are removed from outside of the car. The roundel is a friction fit and the gun site is attached with two screws.

Don't touch the headliner!! Here's what happens... If you remove the headliner, you might as well replace it, since the glass needs to come out, you should get new rubber, since the windshield is out, you'll convince yourself it's a good time to replace your cracked dash, if you're replacing the dash, you better do the wood, etc...

Remove from the outside! Do not cut or drill!

They are held on by plastic/rubber type grommet/plug fasteners (technical name please) similar to other roundels. The metal is held by screws, like Vince said. Look close under the vent.

Thanks guys, Vince you are sooo right on the progression of the headliner, tried that on many a 2002. So I eased the emblem out with a nylon knife and unscrewed the gunsight. Thanks for the confidence and instruction -- success!

Don't be surprised if the new ones lose a chip of enamel right over the two pins from the stress of putting them back in. Might be worth enlarging the hole ever so slightly if you have to spread the pins because that causes the stress.

let me explain myself

this is what i meant by the original parts (the type, depends on the production year):

the emblems (in the topof the photo ) have a very long screw that goes inside the car, so you "must" dissassemble the trim panel to get the nuts out, it is impossible to dissasemble this type from outside

the roundels in the bottom of the picture will have two simple screw accesible when you remove the emblems

i drilled my front emblem support pins because some stupid worker replaced that emblem and glued it with polyurethame mastic, so it was impossible to remove it, it is a dramatic solution when everything fails, but in this case it will be also a good idea if you dont mind destroying the old emblems

here you can see a pic of the support area

in the pic you can also see the small plastic caps that will allow the emblem clips to enter and fix

here you can see the installation of the roundel with 2 simple screws

Agreed. If they do chip, a black sharpie marker can mask lost black enamel.

The old ones came out so nice, I plan to put them back, they do have a nice patina from the past, but the gun sight backing needs renewal so new ones go on. The pics and advice have been very helpful, nice Saturday project. Thanks guys:)

Roundels with nice patina

It's safe to polish the roundels with any minimally abrasive polish--e.g., white polishing compound is very good--or any quality chrome polish should work to freshen their appearance.
