Can early E24/E12 front calipers/rotors bolt on directly?

I know the E24/E12 rotors have 8mm more diameter. So the question is... provided there is enough room inside the wheel, will these bolt right up? Has anyone tried it?

After seeing how difficult it is these days to source rebuilt E9 calipers (I don't believe the part numbers were used on any other cars), it would be nice to be able to move to calipers/rotors that are a bit more common. Any thoughts? Should I just get a caliper and give it a try?

BTW... I believe I found the only rebuilt front caliper currently available and installed it. It was for a solid-rotor car (no spacers). Adding the spacers meant the pins and spring that came with the rebuilt caliper would not work. While the ones I had were generally the correct size, the caliper was just different enough that I had to modify both the spring and the pins to get them to fit. The convenience of being able to maintain rotors/calipers from the much more common E24/E12 cars would be -very- welcome, if it's possible.
