As a long time enthusiast, I am surprised I have never seen or read much from my US Brothers about the rust preventative products widely used in Canada, namely the yearly application type products like Rust Check and Krown rustproofing. (both national franchise operations)
These are the opposite of an undercoat type product. Undercoating is the worst type of rustproofing for our environment, as once it dries, the moisture gets trapped underneath, accelerating the corrosion. The products I have used on my specialty cars the last 25 years are a light mist of an oily product that creeps into the crevices for the whole year. It might tend to swell some rubber components if over applied, but improves the lifespan of electrical connectors, etc. It is applied liberally underhood, on the chassis and into the panel recesses.
I know I used it from 1994 on my VW Corrados and they looked new underhood after 15 winters. . Eastern Canada (Montreal in particular) has about the harshest climate for cars I can think of. Anyway, if it was used widely in the US, there would be a lot more structurally sound E9s on the road today. Is this type of product used in parts of the US?
