So, it's been a long time coming....

Had this car in the shop for almost 2 yrs now. Will post a full restoration thread when it's done but I'm finally close to painting it.

Was Nacht blue when I purchased it but found out it was originally Polaris. Bringing it back to Polaris has been where I've been leaning but I'm pretty tempted to go Colorado. Anyone have an E9 in Colorado orange in the Bay Area for me to see in person??

Polaris is still the front runner but they do seem common.

Thanks in advance.
Andy

Hey John,

I'm the one who actually bought your front windshield some time ago.

Saw your beautiful car still being put together so would be nice to see it done now.

Not free today but will definitely take you up on having a look at it soon.

Thanks!

Colors

Hey Andy,

Is Gabe ready to shoot the coupe? Did they end up doing a lot of metal work?

Don't know of any Colorado coupes up here in the bay area. Only one that I know of is Mehrdads down south. Do consider this color although Gabe does know how to shoot polaris really well! Two turbos,Jabberjaw & a Tii in the last couple years.

That Golf coupe sure looks nice! Also the correct pigment which is hard to match. Another one of my favorite colors.

No problem, just let me know.

Whenever I have slight qualms that inka is just too "out there", I think maybe I should have gone with polaris/red - that's the only other combo I really considered seriously. But charmonix/red is really nice as well, as is polaris/black. And of course the dark blues.

Really, the lines on the car are so right, it can take a lot of color combos well.

Hello, thinking Colorado!?...cool.

My coupe (built 12/69) was originally Polaris but I went with a Colorado/Black (early Alpina livery) treatment for my early racer tribute. What I ended up with was a bit south of Colorado (I call it Arizona!) because its a bit more yellow. I had a very nice Colorado 2002 model that I took to the paint guy to match. There was a neglected, very faded Colorado 2002 floating around SF that I'd see from time to time, but the paint was not a good measure because of its age and condition. That 2002, the model and old fotos were my only reference. Its all I had.....

Paint mixer matched the model perfectly, paint sample lwas spot on, so not his fault and it looked great when I was spraying it, just delicious!. Anyway, from the fotos of the actual Alpina racer that inspired my project currently being restored in Europe, mine looks pretty damn close. But pics and monitors have there issues....maybe I'll see it someday.

Colorado is challenging color to match, originals are rare (seek a Colorado 2002, it'll be easier search than an E9). A true color reference is under the hood and in the door jams. We all (me and my two BMW nut bros) thought mine was right until I went to a show and saw an original Colorado paint job. Its a bit more pastel and a skosh more red than what I got. I'm still very happy as a peach, makes me smile every time I jump in and often stops traffic and some magazine/website editors ;-)

Careful not to add too much 'red' or you will have an Inka-something, which is different.

Here's a link & pic the in the CS reg: VIN 2202577

Good luck and enjoy whatever color you go with!

I have a set of Scheels that will be re-covered along with the rest of the interior so that's wide open.

If Polaris, red would be awesome although it will look very similar to Jabberjaw. Then again, it's gone from the Bay Area so might have to create a new one for us local guys. If Colorado, black would probably be the choice.

Terry,

Thanks for your call today. Really appreciate all your insight/expertise. Body work is near finished. Still have some time as they still need to work on the inside of the trunk and floorpans. Will remind Gabe with your reminder items!

Man, I'm on the fence still... Maybe I should visit Bimmerfest to see some coupe inspiration. Will there be a lot of coupes this year? I haven't been since 2009 where I first got bit by the E9 bug.

Why do people like white cars - Go buy a Honda Civic!!!
Would prefer white to horrid brown or pink etc.. but such sexy cars deserve a more interesting color!!
Thankfully the majority of E9 owners have taste as there are many in Fjord blue or Polaris.

Chamonix with red interior is stunning. I think there are just too many Polaris and Fjord coupes out there, nice colors yes, but more common. Baikal is my new favorite.

Color choice is such a personal thing, it’s a bit hard for me to understand anyone asking what color to paint one’s car but I’ll throw my 2 cents in anyway. While a sharp metallic paint has undeniable pop compared to non-metallic or solid colors I look at them as being a rich man’s or a naive man’s paint job. With solid colors I can touch up paint chips at almost zero cost with a brush where with metallic paints that type of touch up stands out like a sore thumb. Even with expensive trips to the body shop sprayed in touch ups don’t always disappear especially with high metallic colors like silver, gold and light silver blues. With metallics even a blend or match that looks perfect in daylight can stand out like a sore thumb at night in artificial light.

All solid colors can be touched up successfully with a brush although judging from some results I’ve seen many people have no idea how to do it. The only solid color I would recommend staying away from is red which for whatever reason always seems to be changing color making it a hard one to match. Darker colors tend to show dust and even the slightest imperfections in body work. Light solid colors blend well, touch up well, stay cooler in the sunlight and have good night time visibility, their only down point is they show dark vertical stains where the water drips out from behind moldings on cars that are kept outside. On cars that have black trim to break them up I like white, I think it looks elegant when it’s clean and I like the sharp white to black contrast. On cars without trim to break it (white) up white can easily look too plain. My 2 cents worth on the color thing, sort of an ex-painter’s view. Wow, I’m glad I got away from matching paint years ago, it used to make me really stomach sick. ~ John Buchtenkirch
