Hi!

I'm trying to install a standard radio with regular width and depth, but it is impossible to fit it in the console.
The radio is about 1.5 inches too long. All cables are cut to a minimum so as not to occupy space. Has anyone experienced the same problem?

It should fit but you might have to angle it down a little towards the rear of unit to clear the HVAC. I intalled an Alpine CD unit when I first got the car almost 10 years ago, and replaced it with an Alpine Ipod ready unit a couple of years ago. Like yours, my coupe has AC-it's tight but it fits.

It might help if you take off one of the console sides.

Yes I've thought about it and hoped I could avoid it, since the wall is attached with some screws behind the A/C panel. But I guess I'm going to have to do it this way. Another thing I wonder is whether there is a difference in the front of the gear console (automatic without A/C) and on an original AC equipped car. The reason I ask is that there is a lip on the A/C consolle that may be under the front of the gear shift console. If this is the case I guess it would be possible to angle the A/C bracket further back and make more room for the radio.
I do not have the original AC but have gathered some parts here and there without having seen this in real life. If anyone has any good photos I'm very grateful.

Henrik, are those console sides originally from a non-a/c vehicle? I think the a/c models have consoles which allow the a/c and radio panel to sit up against the shift console.

When I installed a/c I used non a/c console sides (cut and refinished the holes for the air intakes) and managed to fit a radio, but it was very tight and the radio sits very low - in fact, similar to yours.

Yes, that's right. This is not the original A/C sides. I discovered this a while after I bought them and got them covered with leather. It is difficult to obtain original sides so I have to live with them until some originals pops up ........
This is probably part of the reason why it is so difficult to mount the radio. Since there is so little space I have currently chosen to place the radio in the glove box. This is OK since it can be controlled with a remote. Radio is pretty new so it does not fits so well with the classic interior anyway.

Attached is a picture of my solution of tweeter mounting. In the ashtrays. The location is almost perfect  (in my ears).

That's a great idea for the tweeters. So the metal surround can be pried off with no damage to replace the vinyl/leather with speaker cloth? Where did you mount the main speakers?

I have noticed this add but I need some walls that I can cover with the same leather I have used in the rest of the interior. They can be rather ragged, but hopefully with some decent grilles.
I got an old speaker grille from a car audio company and cutted out two pieces to fit the ashtray frames. Underneath the grilles is black vinyl and a metal plate with a hole in the same diameter as the tweeter. Clips are made out of 1mm gauge steel and spot welded on the plate (pop rivets can also be used).

It´s very simple to reverse this back to original because you don´t have to cut in the original parts. The tweeter was a bit to high for the ashtray body so I had to grind some mm on the top and bottom.

Here are some photos from the other parts of the system.

I do, with tan inserts-but I guess wouldn't matter. Let me know if you are interested.

Radio

What a really neat solution. Did you have any problems with the cross over placement or the wiring?

An extra amplifier and the cross overs are located under the rear seat, where it is enough room. The wiring was not a problem. But of course, it´s a lot of wiring to handle. Because I also have electric door locks and windows there is a lot of wiring from the A post to the door.

Some radios are deeper than others. I have a Nakamichi 400 in my coupe and it does fit although it is difficult to get back in place. If you take the right side console panel off you can reach in and arrange the wires to give you room.

I have thought about it but i think I´ll wait until I got the right console panels. Right now I have installed the radio in the glove compartment and see how it works.
