In this months Bimmer Magazine there is a great article about Carey Iidas Alpina Csl.If you have never seen Careys car,it is one of the nicest in the world.the article tells how Carey located the car, restored the car and the surprising end

Surprising end? Sold or parted because wife wants to remodel the kitchen :) ?

CArey Lidas' CSL story

For all of us overseas, could someone scan and post the interesting story/ pics of the abovementioned CSL, please!
thanks. Keshav

Please don't feed the Troll...

just spill it - what is the "end" of his car?

Or is this the latest subscription contest for Bimmer magazine?

He sold it to the State of California for $650. Well, ok, the first part is true - sold it to a Chris Provo. It says he's moving on to other things. I think he got tired of driving it in a trailer.

Woooow. Yeah I'll pay $6 to buy a copy of Bimmer to learn that some guy sold his trailer queen to some other guy.

Trailer Queen ..... NO MORE

I've known of the sale for several months and have not spoke with Chris directly about the car ...... but I bet the West Coast crowd will begin to see the car with much more regularity ....... Chris has a passion for "old" BMW's and I've been told the "road to recovery" has been started ....... meaning the car WILL BE DRIVEN !!!!! As they all should be IMHO, .... just sk anyone who has ever attended a SouthEast Sharkfest ..........

Be Safe, Jimmy

It was the first article I read when I my copy. Wonderful story and a great color. Any idea what that car sold for, or at least what you think it's worth?

Well, when non-concours quality "normal" (i.e., not factory Alpina) CSLs go for $30k to $50k, what is the fair market value of one of, hmmm, one or two? $100K? More? Less?

I wouldn't sell it it for less if I had it.

Alpina CSL Value

The value of cars such as Carey's will, and should remain between buyer and seller. I'm sure Carey got a satisfactory number and Chris got what he considered a fair value.... or he would not have purchased the car.

I personally applaud Carey for finding a true enthuasist and friend to pass the "torch" too .... Chris Provo will be an excellent steward for such a car as Carey's !!!!!!! :D I was lucky enough to be the person, Richard Conway picked to be the steward for the "Lemans CSL" and the motorsport "staff CSL" ....... Thanks Richard as well as Carey for taking the time to find the next generation of owners for such truly "GREAT" cars, that both of you spent a major part of your lives ....... loving and restoring !!!!!

Truly great cars often change hands outside the public view, and are never "prostituted" for profit ..... (and yes this is a jab at Barret Jackson)

Can you imagine what that Carey's Alpina CSL, would have brought at Barrets with the current Dollar vrs. Euro exchange ratio !!!! The car then removed to Europe (or God knows where ???) to most likely never be seen by Carey or the US BMW fanatics again !?!?!? :x

I have no problem with capitalism ..... but with cars such as Carey's and the "Motorsport" Werks CSL's .......they have no place in speculators hands ..... to make a fast buck !!!!!! The result with these kinds of cars are almost always the same, they end up in storage and out of the public view for years, or fall into neglect and become "just another collector car" and bad investment ...... to be sold to anyone without regard to proper storage and/or restoration !!!!!

I saw Carey's car as it sat in Atlanta afte being imported to the US by an "enthuasist" and make no mistake, it was in poor shape and clearly not imported for anything but "PROFIT" !!!!! For years I regretted not buying the car (but was not financially able) until I saw the job Carey had done with the restoration .... the right person bought this rare Alpina CSL and I was as proud as Carey was !!

We all know of "great" cars owned by either well meaning owners who continue to "kid" themselves that they will someday restore their "collector car" to its former glory and place in the history of its Marque ..... or "speculators" who own wonderful cars in need of attention by true enthuaist's who refuse to sell them and allow these cars to reach a point beyond financial rescue !!!!!!

Be Safe all, Jimmy :!:

I would say just under 100K. These cars still are undervalued, even the rarer ones. I read the article to. Interesting story. I do not like Bimmer though. Roundel is a far superior magazine IMHO, I wish I had read about it there first, especially considering that is where the story got started (everything would have then come full circle).

Barret Jackson and BMW

Unless you're selling a Healy, Jag or Porsche, I submit that Barret Jackson as evolved is NOT the place to sell your European Vintage Vehicle anymore (at least the last go-around). Take a look at the last listing in Scottsdale.......The European field was so weak, Alain de Cadenet never got the call. Hopefully things will turn around.

1271 cars sold, of that number here's the tally of all offshore vehicles that really didn't do all that well in my estimation, except for maybe the "Amphicar" ($93.5K) and some Healys. The vast majority of sales were American Muscle with lots of retro mods thrown in.

Of particular note there were a lack of- Aston Martins, Vintage Alfas, BMWs, Jensens, Citroens, Vintage Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Maseratis, MGs. It would have been nice to see an odd Iso, Bizzarini, Abarth or Bristol.

If this WERE the venue to sell your European ride, you'd see a lot more of them. I'm not sure there would be any BMW owner willing to trust their prized possession to go at "no reserve" with this crowd... Here's the offshore listing-

1 Amphicar '67
6 Alfas only 1 pre '78 (a '64)
12 Austins all 60's vintage mostly 3000s- (did well)
1 BMW ('58 600)
1 Datsun Z '72
5 Ferraris only 1 pre '84 a '74 365 GT4 2+2 $36.3K
1 Ford Anglia '56
14 Jaguars with the exception of 1 '91 all were '50's and '60's(did well)
6 Mercedes 3 dated prior to '78
1 Messerschmitt
3 MGs (1 re-creation)
1 Mini '66
17 Porsches (5 post '79) (6 "re-creations")
1 Triumph TR6 '72 $26.4K
2 Rolls Royces '85 and '60
13 VWs various iterations
1 Volvo P1800 '65 $33.6K
