Centre grille question

I am sure it's here somewhere but I can find a lot of stuff about grilles but not the answer I need.

I have an early car 71/72 that once had an all silver centre grille . Can I replace it with the type with the black slats or are these slightly wider or a bit different in shape.

I am wondering if the aperture in the front panel of early cars is different to later ones. I also see that part no 51 13 1 826 809 is on real oem so does that mean this grill fits all years.
Many thanks
Paul

A black 5 slat per side grille will fit, there is a black 4 slat one that fits but is a slightly different shape with a wider frame that doesn't look as good imho

Black grille wanted

I agree with Steve. I have a 4-slat black grille and it is visually more bulky and less elegant than the 5-slat grille. Anyone have a black 5-slat grille for sale?

In total agreement! The black 5 slat grills were mostly fitted into the CSLs from the factory, whereas the later black 4 slat grills probably got their start on the 74 and later E3 sedans and later got transfered to the late model CS coupes.

The stock black ones are scarce - you can get a silver 5 slat one and disassemble and paint it satin black, I did and it came out pretty nice and has held up to date. There's a past thread on it.
