So this is how it arrived from the auction, it's not been polished, I'd be interested to know the thoughts of other members re colour and if it has infact faded or if this how Ceylon should look.

The experts will chime in here but, that looks suspiciously clean to be an original paint. However since the engine bay color matches, that is one detail that could possibly confirm that it is the original color. Unless they removed the engine for the repaint. Also, did the CSL not have the sound insulation on top of the inner fenders?

As far as how good it looks, as I mentioned in your other thread, it will look far better in the sun than under overcast skies.

These photos don’t show any of the critical areas, but overall, a Ceylon CSL is a pretty rare bird
 
@ccr2002 I believe has an original paint Ceylon CS, and could provide a point of comparison.

IF this paint is original, please preserve it! The car looks fabulous.

@colrich , your CSL has had a respray in the original color but none the less, that’s pretty much how Ceylon looks like. Polishing would help enhance the gold but if that’s not the color you like……….

He has had two ceylon e9ss, the CS is original paint IIRC, don't know about the CSL, although I have seen it.

The CS was a long term Utah desert car, survivor.

My spare hood have genuine Ceylon (measured with varnish meter ca. 120µm), i discovered it under the layer of Sienna Brown.
After reading this thread, I was little bit curious to see how it will look after some light polishing, because in general Ceylon on my hood was satined for bondo & next layer of paint.
In satin it look much lighter, after polishing it look duller, more brown.
I would say Colrich have the same one, and as for me his car look stock, only that front spoiler is not, it also have slightly different colour from the body.
Maybe CCR have genuine Ceylon with additional clear coats that make it lighter?

Here how just polished Ceylon look without glossy clear coat - inside polished, outside satin. Outside frame was taped, so the difference was visible.

As a general rule, metallic colors are extremely difficult to judge on photographs, especially on a computer. The obvious reason is that the metal flakes have nothing to reflect unless there is a strong point light to energize them. Therefore they often will look dramatically different in real life and even then will look completely different in the sun vs in the shade.

In other words, I would say that it is impossible to say if this is the correct color based only on what it looks like in these photos. The only thing we can guesstimate on is whether it is been repainted or not, based on the usual clues of overspray, poor masking, orange peel, window gasket removals etc…
 
Chuck’s 73 CS was stored in a shipping container for decades in the San Joaquin valley of California with roughly 25K miles as I recall, the paint is original. I think the CSL that Peter now owns was repainted and is also exquisite in its appearance.
 
If we want to compare apples to apples - colrich will have to make photo in very sunny day when the car will be in full sun.
 
having looked at a bunch of ceylon cars in all types of light (in person) as well as photographs in all types of light ... when i see the 'brown gold' it is true in photos and in person ... no matter what the light is. in general oxidization should cause it to fade, not darken. most of the brown gold ceylon cars that i have seen in person (mostly 2002's) were confirmed repaints due to failing original BMW metallic issues.

How little rust is their on her or how bad is the rust on her ?

She might pass the MOT ( I know she is mot exempt ) , to give you a piece of mind that she is road worthy !!!

It was last taxed in 2004 so change all the fluids an check everything over , I did take it for a short drive, I was surprised how well it went, but the idea of old brake fluid stopped me going to far.
As regards the body I know these cars have a bad reputation for rust an I can see it has had repairs to the front wheel wells, but I know from past experience that what can start as just some minor works can end up with you doing a complete restoration an 3yrs have passed, then you can end up with a car that is so mint you don't want to use it unless the weather is perfect, an I definitely do not want to go down that route.
There is one on car and classic in Ceylon Gold at 145k that's restored an although it looks great is the driving experience going to be that much different to mine, I think not, so just make sure everything works an drive it, they are one cool looking car, even in Ceylon
 
Drive it and enjoy it ....make sure it is safe to drive and brakes , servos , brake lines are all good

It's always a good idea over winter to have the body , structure of the car checked on a ramp ,
Rust check , jacking points etc etc
Just to give you a piece of mind and do a tick list of stuff to do in the future

Looks like you are just looking to make it into a good usual able driver able , presentable car ,
that Is not a shed or a concourse car on wheels

That Ceylon car for sale on car and classic has just had a simple make over ie strip down, paint job and
Parts made shiney to make it look like a nut and bolt resto ...far from it
