Chain tensioner rail replacement

I am replacing the front oil seal in the lower timing chain cover, should I replace the tensioner rail while doing this? The book says I have to remove the chain to do the right side guide rail (NFW), what about the tensioner-can this be done without removing the chain?
 
Your engine death rattle just stopped. Feeling lucky again so soon? No don't.

Make sure it's not a loose bolt on the cover. One of the ones that should have sealer. Think thin wrench.
 
Lol. I've checked the bolts - all tight, so I'm going in for the seal. Figured "while I'm there" I'd do the tensioner rail if it's easy, if not, I will leave it alone.

You used a standard thickness head gasket? Bolts not too tight/ Upper cover not bowed open on the water pump side?

Wasn't leaking before?

The manual says remove the radiator. I think they were working on a non a/c car.

One last word of caution while you strap on those new skates on the E9 park:

Carefully part the oil sump gasket from the timing case cover
with a knife blade.

If the oil sump gasket is damaged, remove the sump 11 13 000.

I've had a very small leak from the front for a long time, the upper cover is not leaking. Now that my engine is super clean the accumulated gunk is annoying me, plus I am waiting for some carb parts from UK so I have the radiator out and everything exposed.

Is the tensioner rail replaceable without removing the chain?

sure you can do it and the guide- you need to remove upper and lower covers and separate the cam gear.

the tensioner has 1 clip.
you need to pull the tensioner piston also.
Make absolute sure of 2 things....

the tensioner must go over the partition on the lower timing cover.
the tensioner must rest in the yoke of the tensioner piston
always replace the lower or/and upper seal in a slightly different place from which you removed it- a little bit in or a little bit out.
