I normally purchase my Apple accessories from the Apple Store. However, I have found that the Coupe's ( 1971) cigarette charger socket is a bit wider that the adapter sold by Apple. Does anyone have a recommendation that will fit the Coupe, preferably available through Amazon ? Thanks

Discreetly mount a modern cig lighter/power outlet under passenger seat or in glove box for modern accessories?

Put an accessory plug in the glove box. I used velcro to mount one up out of sight for powering an iPhone.

But my Alpine head unit is in the glove box and now the ECU takes up even more room! I did contemplate the hood release box though but have been too busy with others things like the b35 and A/C install. We need someone willing to be a saint and find the right adapter. I'm sure Arde has a solution!

cig lighter USB power adapter

I have a USB power adapter that works well in the 2002 cig lighter. I'll make a point to check this weekend to see how it fits in the coupe cig lighter and report back. I know that I've gone through several adapters in order to find one that works well in the 2002.

I hardwired a usb transformer and jack to the stereo power source under the shift console and it's stealthy

The lighter adapter sits loose in my E24 and E9 so I drive constantly alternating shifting, straightening the shift knob, and jiggling the lighter adapter until I hear the phone charge beep.

Cars should have USB ports, their absence in E9s is lack of vision of the car designers.

(I spent three years of blood and sweat building a house. I was snooping around during the open house while some techies were badmouthing the house because it lacked USB in every room...)

Older euro sockets were bigger in diam than US sockets. The orig Escort detector came with a plastic sleeve to make the skinnier US plugs fit snuggly. If you cannot find one of this type of sleeve, you can always just get a short Euopean/US adapter pig tail on amazon,

If you do find or make a sleeve, you might need to bend the side tng out jut a tad to make solid intact with the receptacle.

I've had a similar problem. Simply get a small narrow faced screwdriver and spread the outer prongs on the barrel face. The center point is not an issue. Fit will be OK.

Push it into a normal socket it will compress again, so I have one dedicated to the coupe.

Arde gets all the power he needs from his oversized spleen

John,

From the photos that DIN adapter looks way too skinny for a US receptacle. Have you used one?

Chris

Unless I am missing something here the iPhone power interface is always a USB connection. 8 pin or lightning the same.

So from the cigarette lighter any lighter USB converter will work.

I have a Belkin which can run two USB simultaneously. In the coupe it is a bit narrow so difficult to maintain contacts in the barrel. Simply splayed the thong pressure connectors on the side. Works fine.

Just don't use it in another car with a narrower lighter barrel. Will compress the thongs then requiring a do over when used in the coupe.

Don't know. But if the intent is to simply charge the phone I'd go to Best Buy or other. Prices are really close and much easier to return if it doesn't work.

The Belkin double USB is nice if you are traveling with the significant other and he or she wants a charged phone as well. At least that seems to be my world!
