as i am nearing the replacement of my engine to a euro b34, with its higher HP, i think it wise to put in a new clutch / pressure plate, etc. so my question is - what is the best clutch to use? is there something better from another model that is better than the stock e9 clutch? in the past, i have heard that Sachs makes the best product. so. what do you think?

clutch master / slave cylinder - stay with the stock e9 product? any improvement in other m30 developments should be considered? does the e28 m5 clutch work?
 
i just mounted a new Sachs set on the rally car ( engine is a '86 3.5l , Getrag dogleg )
i did see now that Sachs has also performance types...but had no time now for further looking.... will see how long it lasts...
box and bellhousing in separate pieces makes it very easy to change clutch.

Note that the 1974/75 model cars use a different slave cylinder and bell housing.
Early slave is about $250.00

as a follow up to this question, with a b34 engine (US or euro) and a 5 speed getrag ... do we still use the early version ... or the later version? i hate to buy both. isn't the throw out bearing different on the '74 / '75 cars as well? so which throwout works for the same 5 speed?
 
When rebuilding the engine & clutch, what is common treatment for the Flywheel and Pressure Plate friction surfaces? The originals have ~100k mi, flywheel has minor wear but not seeing any replacements out there. Should it be machined? Pressure plate looks better but it seems easier to find new, so inclined to just replace it.

Would this NOS 633CSi clutch and pressure plate (~$72) be compatible with an E9 with an M30B35 engine and Getrag 265 transmission? Is anyone aware of reliability issues with aged friction materials? This is my 1st restoration and then I decided to swap in a more modern engine and tranny, so without the benefit of experience with all these parts, all the part selections are a bit nerve wracking. Thanks in advance! Dave

Not an expert by any stretch, but typically send the flywheel out to have the surface ground, and always replace the pressure plate, clutch disk, pilot bearing and throw-out bearing. Just too cheap to do to ensure they all work well, especially considering the labor or removing the transmission if you have a problem.
 
As above, Re surface the flywheel and replace the other two items. What you are looking at on Ebay is a cleverly worded brand "X" of some sort. If you read it carefully, it says it replaces Sachs, not a Sachs product itself. Stay away from that one.
 
Unless I had a very severe senior moment I would swear that ebay ad was worded differently earlier this morning and showed differently. Maybe I really missed it!!
 
A Sachs clutch will last longer than you with the kind of driving most of us do in an E9. My heavily modded engine is using basically a stock clutch.
Remember the E9 is pretty light so not a huge load to engage a clutch. Do NOT use a lightened flywheel as in aluminum. Stick with steel. Leaving a traffic light will remain the same as you would expect. Also be careful resurfacing a flywheel. Many that are 30 plus years old have been resurfaced. There is supposed to be a lip of the disk contact surface compared to the surface of the metal where the pressure plate mounts. There is a spec somewhere for that? It's not in my head.
I have over 50k on my M5 and replaced the clutch disk at approx. 50k but not the pressure plate. That's a car with 360 HP that is driven hard and fast.
