Wondering if anyone has had this experience; I am putting a Getrag 265 5 speed out of a 1980 633 csi into my 3.0 cs replacing the automatic. I have the transmission and purchased and resurfaced a flywheel to match the 1974 engine and also purchased a new pressure plate, disk, TO bearing, etc. Both the old and the new disks are Sachs and both have the same part number however there seems to be a significant difference in the thickness of the splines on the new disk and it will not fit on the input shaft from the transmission. It's not a tight binding fit, it will not go on at all??. I counted the splines and measured with a good MIC and the splines just seem to be to "thick".

Does anyone have any ideas? I attached a pics of the transmission in case that will help with this mystery.

Thanks!

That is strange. If it is a 265 clutch, it should fit just fine. Heck, I kept the clutch going from a 225 to a 265. Perhaps the clutch was improperly manufactured? Can you contact the vendor and get a replacement?

By the way, while the trans is out, do trans seals, shift linkages, and possibly the rear main seal. It is vastly easier to do them when the trans is out and it makes a world of difference.

Will do

Thanks Atlas-

I did get a replacement clutch that I'm trying today. My parts guy said that could be it as well. I will also take your advice on refreshing the trans. and rear seal. Can you point me to the thread where the shift linkage etc. is refreshed? As for the seals, definitely doing that this weekend.

I appreciate the input!

+1

When I did my clutch I did all these plus the front bearing seal/gasket and the 4 shift tower mounts - all cheap parts, makes a big difference, and you wont have to go back there for a long time. Careful removing the old shift linkage seal - it's easy to scratch the aluminum - I got a set of seal picks from Harbor Freight, tapped the pointed end of one of them through the metal frame of the seal and leveraged it out that way - this one can be tough to get out. Try not to pound it in and install the new one behind it like some sites suggest. For the rear seal you'll need a new lock ring, cheap but you'll ruin the one on there when you remove it.

Minor note

265s were used by other manufactuers. Mercedes W-113 series, early sl 230s etc., used one that had different splines. That's the only one that reportedly is known not to be the same.

Although BMW use to list several discs for say E-24s depending upon the year; no longer though.

I'd find the ID plate and do a little research.

Problem solved

Thanks for the tips on freshening up the trans. I will do all suggested replacements. Regarding the clutch disk, it seems the first disk was defective as the new one went on as it should.

Again- I apppreciate the help!
