I'm thinking the clutch slave cylinder has gone south on my 72 bavaria 3.0. the slave cylinder in the bavaria is the round style which is very similar to the one in my 2002. will the 2002 clutch slave cylinder work in the bavaria, any help appreciated.

Nope. 2002 slave cylinder is smaller. E3 and e9 4 speed use the same slave part number: 21521102060
They’re not cheap. Still available from BMW.

You should keep a spare even if yours is good.
Not that expensive.

thanks for the info. This car was apparently in the hands of someone who didnt know his arse from his elbow. Weber carbs improperly installed, took me several hours to sort the improper mounting and linkage, improper ignition wiring, timing, wiring for the altenator etc. point is i noted the level of fluid in the resevoir has not dropped as would be expected if the master or slave were leaking. I'm beginning to think the clutch hydraulics need to be bled. I havnt started to work on it except to get it started from sitting over the winter but I'll bleed the system and post the results when finished.
