Colortune?

I was disappointed to not see more (any) replies to this question. Here's my random thoughts.

- The way the e9's sparkplug holes are beneath the cam cover, you probably couldn't see a Colortune very well. Might need a mirror.

- Colortune is old technology - not that there is anything wrong with old technology - heck, e9's are certainly old tech! But, the wideband oxygen sensor has pretty much replaced the Colortune. And, with a w.b. oxygen sensor, you can monitor the mixture while you are driving, and log data on engine rpm vs. throttle position vs. mixture.

Colortunes

Yes, but on other cars- TRs.The principle is that a given combustion burn has a corresponding color- yellow-orange- blue; much like setting an acetylene torch or the fire on a boiler. They work. If you have one, you would have to check both banks- 1-3, and 4-6 to adjust each respective carb and or alter jets. There are two versions of Colortune; each has a particular spark plug thread/ size. They used to come in a wooden box.

But as Jay says, times change and wideband or an oxegen sensor can tell you the same by measurement similar to a thermocouple in milliamps which is what FI ( the ECU) does in some cases in some systems . Many car owners use this method now, but requires a bung in the exhaust or header and of course the device and in it's simplist form a sensitive meter shooting for 400ma which equates to a preffered fuel ratio. There are suppliers that sell an in car meter so you can watch it, there are others that are all digital and downloadable.:-D

Those computerized ones are nice, but pricey as I would rather spend that kind of dough on other parts, I was thinkng for 30 bux on eBay it might be fun to play with, and yes, in the dark with a mirror. So yay or nay?
